Alone

you can start fires with the batteries of the satellite phone, TV cam, or the light they give you. You can start fires with the camera lense if the sun is out. you can build a V frame and keep the fire going for 12 hours by having gravity feed logs to the fire. You gotta build a shelter over your fire and keep it WET, or it'll burn, sooner or later. Keep fire and sparks well away from your gear, hair, clothing. Heat the tarp shelter with big, flat rocks that you've heated in/near your fire. Bury them under your sleeping area. Primitives all over the world make a machete suffice for all their cutting jobs.

once you get one fire (can be done with the flare they give you) you can make charred material and then you can start fires much more easily. You can keep tinder and charred material and kindling dry, you can find rocks that will spark from your saw or your machete, and you can make a bow drill.

every bear aint 900 lbs. In fact, most are 200 lbs, just like the man that you "think" you can handle ok with a .38 snub.

But you have to multiply by a factor of 2 or 3 when it comes to animal strength vs man. Sort of in the same way that a male (or female, but less so) human being on meth or completely out of his effacing mind is crazy strong even if he weighs 130 lb.

alewn, you're a fountain of knowledge! I think though that there are rules against using the given items for survival and comfort. I think only the 10 items you pick can be used as tools. I thought I even read somewhere that they were pretty clear on things like not cutting up clothes for cordage and other creative solutions like that.

Anyone still watching this? I missed a bunch of episodes but have seen the most recent 3 or 4.

Yep! Down to 4 left. Was on a google hang out with Nicole hosted by John McCann yesterday, should be up on youtube in a few days I'll post back here. She answered a ton of questions, especially all of mine around food, I hope she won! :D

Was hosted by aroundthecabin.com with a handful of us in there. I thought it was a great discussion! Skip ahead to 6 mins where it really starts.

and the same thing applies. If you want good odds of stopping him in time, you have to brain him, just as you will the bear. if you are allowed to use things you find, why would you not be able unravel a hammock made of paracord, hmm? Better yet, why not just start with a hammock made of folded gill net?

The season ended last week right? Did season 1 do a final wrap up episode? I can't remember.

Thoughts on last week?????

The survival knife I'd use to survive a bear attack would be a Jeep. I'd drive like heck outta there! Or please gimme an M1A1 Abrams tank. That'd do it.

But I'd use a GSO-6 or -7/7 in the most remote situations. I've only used 5.1s, but I'd choose a little more length on the blade in case I needed it.

I haven't ever seen the TV show though....

When speaking of bears, let us not forget the 70+ year old hunter who fought off an angry wild grizzley with a Buck 110, to the point he was able to then get to his .30-06 rifle and finish off the wounded bear. Then walk a mile or so out of the woods to his truck, and drive himself to the hospital. And survived.

Never underestimate a blade, determination, and probably more than a little bit of luck.

I certainly believe the story of wrestling Caesar. But that is a different situation.

Actually, he was just under 70. And he didn't drive his truck to the hospital. He was flown there after he walked/crawled about 2 miles out. In the snow.

Google it. There are a couple of interesting (funny) write-ups about it.

A little embellishment, I think. But an amusing read. There are other articles on it. That was just the fun one.
I believe a canadian farmer killed a bear with no weapons.

Would love to read that story.
Long and the short is my friend told me he read the story on a plackard with roaming thru Canada. I also heard about the incident while in Canada. As a side note My mother is 75 and 1 of 13 raised in Canada. Her great grand mother would take all the kids berry picking and when they got rowdy she would form a circle and pick two of the youngings to fight. I have heard this story from many members of my family.
In regards to her training 60 years before UFC I have personally seen my mother flip over her moped handle bars going 25mph and get back on like nothing happened,,, Bleeding. Long story.
In addition I have seen my mom attach 2 Doberman pinchers who were about to attach me years ago when I was 5-6 on a Christmas walk. She was fine and the dogs disappeared as fast as they arrived.
With out much research this is what I found. IMO a Canadian killing a bear with no weapons is believable.

Nice!
First one: Wow!
Second one: Holy Shisa!!
Third one: Fu** Yeah!!!!

I was literally crying from the third one. The writing is hilarious. And the old Cree is... Well.… yeah, the ultimate BA.

Thanks for the links!

Old thread but the show is now in it's 3rd season I believe. I would take a 7/7.

Yes, season 3! It seems like a pretty interesting cast this season. They are in Patagonia now whereas the first two seasons were on Vancouver Island. I watched the first episode a few weeks ago, but I'd like to get caught up.
