alternative lanyard material

So, it seems like the preferred lanyard material is paracord. Unfortunately, it's hard to find within Canada. Anyone have any suggestions for some neat alternatives to make lanyards for my knives? I've been thinking perhaps leather... Thanks!

Leather cordage would look pretty sweet, IMO.

If it's a purely a question of function, like for a big fixed-blade chopper, a shoelace works fine.

I was just about to say shoe strings, I made a little lanyard thingie one day sitting in a deer stange with nothing to do.

I used to get my paracord from ebay, but most recently I used Supply Captain and they were great. took a week or so to get to Canada.

I use nylon mason's line for my smaller riggings. Strong stuff and reasonably priced. Melt the cut ends just like you do paracord.

Leather works well, different splices and braids make for a cool look. horse hair can be twisted or braided into a lanyard. The problem with natural material, is it absorbs odors, fluids, and then it can stiffen up. If not used for hunting or fishing either works well.

Yep, I use leather on several of my EDC's. Lasts a looong time and doesn't look too ugly as it ages and wears.

+1:thumbup: I've used leather boot lace with good effect. looks nice if done right.

I got an I.D. pocket thingy at a conference once, with a red nylon neck cord. It has the little round ball clamp to adjust for length, and it works perfectly for a lanyard.

thx - cpr

Do a google search for paracord, just click canadian sites only, I got a coulpe of results from it. One in the toronto area the other in Regina. I am sure that I saw some at Cabela's but its not on thier Canadian web site.

Check out your local sewing shop and look for colored cords. They should have lots of different sizes and colors. Visit your local hardware stores and DIY centers and see what they have for ropes and cords. Should be a huge variety there!

Like some others here I also use nylon cords sometimes, mainly because it is available in bright colors which makes it easy to find an EDC item during camping and hiking. The shop where I buy paracord only has paracord in the colors black and olive green.

All of my lanyards are leather which can be found all sorts of places.

John,

Can you share some online sources? I've been looking for some leather lanyards but haven't had much luck finding what I'm looking for. Google search of "leather knife lanyard" doesn't really give me too many legitimate hits for suppliers or makers. Thanks.

When I have needed leather for things like lanyards, I just buy leather boot laces. They sell them in a lot of places locally, but a quick google search for leather boot laces found a ton of sites that sell leather, rawhide, buckskin and others. Rawhide laces are as little as $3 for two 72" pieces. With a 72" piece you could make a nice traditional or a braided lanyard.

Any cordage will work perfectly fine. Personally, I like the thinner kernmantel nylon cords (maybe half the diameter of paracord).

Leather, as has been suggested, is also very good.

I also like the more decorative rat-tail strings-very colourful.
