For a forge made from bricks.

Are red bricks or concrete bricks useable?

If so, how long before they would deteriorate?

If they were coated with T100 etc. would they last?

Experiences to share please.

Are you thinking of using morter to hold them together or just stacking them? Wondering about the insulation value, are you planning on covering the exterior with refractory or burying it? Koa Wool or refractory on the inside?

Are you having trouble finding suppliers for firebrick?

I found my firebricks, refractory cement and castable refractory cement at a local tile shop. And the firebricks were cheaper than regular bricks and cinderblocks (cement blocks). So much cheaper that I use the firebricks for stacking under the small forge instead of cement blocks.

I tried using cement blocks as a backing for heat treating with a torch. It worked but it took quite a long time to heat a small blade. The cement block couldn't reflect the heat efficiently. When I tried the same trick with firebricks, it took a lot less time (and propane.)

I love in South Fl and fire is a mystery down here. Fire = heat and we don't need it!

Anyhow, I see a discarded propane BBQ down the street and a light bulb went off. What if?

I use the BBQ lava base as the support for my firebrick forge, the frame to hold the propane tank and my weed burner, the wheels to transport it outside. Besides all that it would be at a good working height. Close it and it looks like a BBQ. A natural!
