Alternatives to the Spyderco Waterway?

hey,

The Waterway looks amazing and is a nice price at 130 bucks (knifeworks), but before I go ahead and order one, what other alternatives are out there for the same price or cheaper?

Filleting fish and smaller camping tasks are my main priority. A bird and trout is nice, but they seem pretty specialised in their use. What I like about the Waterway (hopefully) is that I could probably go from filleting to getting a small fire going without having to worry about too much dulling.

TIA,

Dan

For what you get in the waterway package (the awesome knife, g-clip, and great sheath) I can't think of anything else you can get like it for the price. I'd say just go ahead and get one. You can save a few bucks one the exchange.

It's a great knife.

Yep, there’s not much info out there yet on it so I’ve been across pretty much everything Surfingringo and others have posted :) Lance’s Instagram has a lot of cool footage so it’s nice to support a guy like that too

I've been working on a review. Just haven't had time to put it all together. This type of knife is very specific. It's the best I've had in this type of knife. Below is a comparison shot to give perspective. I like this knife more than the southfork (the steel being a big reason) and more than the fish hunter (design, materials, sheath). I've had a few aqua salts and the waterway has proven to be much better.

The main criticisms I would say is that the handle is a bit thin for extended woods work and a little too long. That said, for the intended use of this knife, I think everything is just about perfect. The longer and thinner handle works great for pinch type grips. I don't think you will be disappointed if you get one, and I can't think of an equivalent in the production world.

Thanks Cray! I don’t mind a thinner handle and same as you wouldn’t consider it a negative on this sort of knife. How does the edge and tip hold up to wood processing? I’ve never had the chance to see one in real life...

I haven't done much wood processing with this knife. A few green branches in the backyard. I have broken down a lot of cardboard and done a bunch of food prep. I can say the edge has held up perfectly. Touch it up is easy. I love this steel. It is a great all arounder with the big bonus of rust proof.

As for the tip, it is thin, but that is the nature of this knive's purpose. It's about the same thickness as a pm2 (waterway on the left):

Just got back from a walk on the beach with mine. I’ll vouch for everything craytab said; it’s just a great all around package.

I put an order in after reaching out to Lance for some advice. What a legend, taking time out of his day to answer my stupid questions :) they were sold out a lot of places so I’m glad I pulled the trigger now rather than later.
Let us know what you think when you get it!

I have a Waterway and really like the knife. The scales are excellent, super grippy and comfortable. Really great knife and well worth the $$.

I just got it yesterday! Really nice design and very comfortable in a lot of grips. The blade came shaving sharp, but the edge is not symmetrical at the tip. Not worried as I’m sure it cuts just fine and will straighten itself out after sharpening :)

Have you noticed any wear on the knife from the sheath? I’ve never had a sheath in this style and noticed it rubs a sharp edge against the scales.

I have not.....Mine was pretty well squared away, but i put a 6K polished edge on it and it just looks that much nicer now. I would expect the polished edge to show signs of wear from the sheath more quickly and I have not noticed anything.
