Hey,
Those Altoid containers are pretty cool, what would be the best things that you could pack into one for a mini survival kit or maybe tinder box?
I was thinking:
-Metal Match with striker
-some type of cordage
-fish hooks
-iodine tablets
-anitibacterial cream
-aspirin
-razor blades
-tinder
-also, maybe polish the inside of the lid to a bright finish for a signal mirror?
-then either put a piece of tape around the lid or wrap it in saran wrap to make it waterproof
-you could put a few layers of duct tape on the top and bottome of the can so if you needed some you could just peel a piece off.
- you could also wind monofiliment around the edge of the can and put a piece of tape over it to keep it from unwinding

Suggestions?

Mine has flint, my striker, some charcloth, some uncharred cloth to make more, and some steel wool. It rides opposite my metal match, beneath a lighter, and caddy-corner from a knife.

I have an Altoid box (small 1.76 OZ) that I use as a first aid kit. I have 2 moist towlettes for washing of wounds, 1 book of matches, 1 pencil cut in half, 1 single AAA battery Maglite Solitaire, 4 Q-tips, 3 small candles, 1 M38 can opener, 1 small SAK with only 2 small blades, 3 safety pins for turning clothes into bandages, 3 different size bandaids. This kit goes everywhere with me. I waterproofed it by wrapping it in a Ziplock bag, squeezing the air out, and tying it with a rubber band. Hope this helps.

I used to carry a "be prepared kit" at all times. This was intended to get me out of trouble in urban or field environments. It was made of a man's zippered wallet with the insides removed. I was highly influenced by the TV series "I Spy" where the heros always had escape from capture. Inside was:

4" piece of broken bastard file with 40 feet 30# cord wrapped around the end as a grip. The broken surface of the file served as a hardened scraper. The file could cut through iron bars or sharpen a knife or an improvised weapon.

2 packs of cardboard matches, intended more as fuse or explosive material than for source of fire. The file could also be used to remove powder from the head of the matches for improvised gunpowder.

1 or 2 "Party Popper" propulsion units. These came out of little carboard party favors that launch streamers when you pull on a string. When removed from the favors these were like lady finger firecrackers with friction igniters. They were handy for improvising zip guns, alarms, or booby traps.

1 extra small lighter, for fire and illumination.

2 fish hooks.

1 5-bladed Boy Scout knife with side panels removed. Included awl blade and philips head screw driver.

1 wire saw. (sometimes left out in urban setting).

1 miniature mechanical pencil and 4 different colored leads + short red, blue, & black ball point pen refills (my forgery kit).

1 miniature note pad.

1 square foot of aluminum foil for reflectors, cooking, bypassing burglar alarms etc.

2 or 3 Bandaids.

1 tin of aspirin.

1 condom.

My 1.76 oz. Altoids box also carries:
A small button compass
Some misc. safety pins
A flat whistle (coast guard approved)
Some of those trick birthday candles that reignite when blown out.
A few sheets of "write-in-the-rain" paper
Some "life-Boat" matches w/striker
Some assorted band-aids
A flat box cutting razor
Some steel safety wire

A couple wraps of duct tape around can for possible future use.
