Aluminum Pins?

I just aquired some 1/4" and 1/8" aluminum rods. Has anyone ever used aluminum pins in handles? Seems that it would be very forgiving to work with. Any draw backs? Is it easy to use?

John,
I've used aluminium pins a few times. They polish up real nice but they oxidize real fast and if the knife is ever dropped they can get some nasty nicks in them.
still no reason not to use what you have!

I second what was written here. Aluminum is softer than steel, for sure, and is probably even softer than brass, so it is nice to work with. The major drawback is if the pins are big enough, they will show scratches pretty easily. I've used aluminum in mosaic pins with no problems. As far as the oxidation comment, I don't understand what it matters. Aluminum oxidizes fast, but the result is essentially a clear protective oxide coat over the metal. I don't think it discolors at all. This is basically a thinner layer of what is achieved by clear anodizing aluminum. You can't even tell it's there. Maybe on bigger pins it is noticeable, though?

I just meant that like brass aluminium will lose its shine if you don't keep it polished up.

Thanks, everyone! I believe I will give it a try. Being that this is going to be my first handle attempt, I hope that aluminum will be a good (easy) material to work with for the pins. Thanks again...

Ruana knives have had aluminum rivets for over 30 years. They are easy to peen hold good. Nice to work with I think but I use brass, stainless or nickel.
