I have liked CS for quite some time and have only owned a Recon 1. I started thinking about getting an American Lawman due to the great reviews online. CS website indicated they’re sold out but a few other online shops had them in stock so I have been thinking/planning on purchasing one. I wandered into a shop today not planning on purchasing anything and Saw they had two In stock that happened to be the CTS-XHP. I picked one up but wondering if I should return it and get the one made out of the s35vn instead. The price was above the current websites asking price but lower than the CS website. Thoughts? Thanks.

Cold steel cts-xhp is fine steel. I don’t think you’ll notice a difference between it and s35vn. The cts-xhp should be the upgraded dlc coated blade too.

I would personally just keep what you purchased. You’ll gain no benefit from getting the current model.

I agree with "The Italian", he's right. CTS-XHP is often touted as an equivalent to D2 tool steel. Cold Steel had issues sourcing the steel from what I've referenced, and switched the to CPM-S35VN in 2015. An alloy developed in conjunction with Chris Reeve, if I'm not mistaken. Here's the official bulletin from Cold Steel:

Dear Cold Steel Customers,

We’d like to let you know about some changes you’ll begin to see on Cold Steel products—sold both in the U.S. and internationally. We have found that it’s become increasingly difficult to acquire the quantities of CTS®XHP steel needed to produce our products within a timely fashion. While we are very pleased with the outstanding performance our CTS®XHP products have provided customers over the years, we are challenged by its inaccessibility and feel that using American CPM-S35VN offers a formidable solution to this problem. We feel we can deliver the same, great quality products to our customers sooner and for the same price, by using American CPM-S35VN steel—which arguably offers the same strength, durability, and edge retention properties that are associated with CTS®XHP. Our goal is to always have satisfied customers, and we feel that by eventually using CPM-S35VN for more products, it will allow us to get our awesome blades in your hands sooner and help to prevent long backorder wait times. This change will not take place overnight, but rather, will be a gradual process. Thank you for your continued support and stay #neverunarmed!

Sincerely,
Lynn C. Thompson and the Cold Steel Crew

I know a few owners of the Lawman, who have both alloy-versions. Yours is cool for the 'collectability-factor', if you ask-me.

Thanks. I’m not very knowledgeable about the different steels but reading through some of these forums I saw a lot of opinions that the CTS wasn’t as good!

Friend, consider yourself lucky you picked up an XHP Lawman! XHP is a fine all-around steel and it’s unfortunate that Cold Steel did away with XHP. S35VN is awesome as well, but I’m glad to have picked up two XHP knives.

Enjoy your knife, man.

Since you already have a Recon 1 and the Lawman, I suggest getting the AK-47 someday. Complete the hard-use G10 trifecta.

I’ve been eyeing that knife. Interesting enough though my brother, who was never into knives, decided he wanted a good knife to carry looked at my Recon 1 and promptly purchased it. He called me yesterday to tell me that when he ordered the Recon 1 he saw the AK47 and really liked it. He promptly ordered that one as well. When he gets it in it’ll probably push me to get one.

The cool features of the AK-47 are the wave deployment and the aluminum pommel. The latter can be useful in emergencies for when you need to break glass. Really cool knife.

That would make an interesting-thread in itself, DZ. Which "Big Three" are your Cold Steel grails?
From the current humble collection, here’s mine:

Code 4 in XHP
AK-47 in XHP
Recon 1 in S35VN

I’ve yet to pick up the 4-Max or any of the AD knives unfortunately, hana. Someday. :D

You might find that doesn't work, aluminium is very soft and to break toughened glass you ideally need something harder than the glass itself i.e a carbide tip. still i would rather beat a pane of glass with the back of an CS AK47 rather than my fist :)

I couldn't find where to ask this question: when was Lawman in AUS8 discontinued?
