Hey, I'm sorry if this has been asked, I tried a google search but didn't have much luck.

I am looking for an American made hatchet or axe. Probably something in the 13"-19" range (some places refer to them as axes, some as hatchets in that range) but I am not opposed to a longer handle than that. I was really looking at a Wetterlings, but if at all possible I'd like to do my part and buy American.

Something in a similar price range to the Wetterlings would fit the bill. I am not looking for a backpacking tool, but something for some work around the house or on camping trips (i.e. not a backpacking trip, but perhaps with a little hiking, if that makes sense).

Thanks!

You cant go wrong with a Estwing Hatchet, American Made "And will last a Lifetime" And a Great Buy for the Money,

i have a Snow and Nealley and i've been very happy after some grinding to fix up the edge.

if you like, you could get one from Brian over at Off The Map Outfitters with the grinding already done. i've checked out a couple of these in person, and he does a really good job with them!

"And will last a Lifetime"

I just passed the one I got when I was 10 on to my brother to use hunting white tail. He says it works great.

I'm 52 and still have the scar on my ankle from a father-son camping trip the year I got the hatchet. We had just gotten back to the river bank from a trip to the emergency room to get a fish hook out of my brother's calf when I put a 3/8" nick over my ankle bone with my new Estwing hatchet. A little bloody, but we all three looked at it and mentally calculated the additional time in the car and emergency room for a couple of stitches versus more time fishing and bushwhacking and all pronounced me fit to keep on.
