I was going thru some of my old ASG magazines and was wondering if there was another magazine out there that was similiar to American Survival Guide or do I just keep re-reading the mags I have..Thanks Tony

I think the current version of many of the old magazines are the internet forums on similar topics. Mags may still be there, too, of course. Knife mags are. :)

Modern Survival took my subscription money for their online magazine, then went OFFLINE for quite awhile now...........finally deleted their bookmark. My money is GONE.

Be careful !

.

Try Backwoods Home, Wilderness Way, or the Backwoodsman. They are a little more into the primitive living concept than ASG was but there still pretty good.

I think that whole "one man against the world"/Red Dawn/Rambo survival fantasy has pretty much died out. And there are still communities where racism holds sway but that isn't the American way. Hell, we fought a civil war about that and the good guys won. American Survival Guide didn't change with the times and it became obsolete for lack of a better term. Soldier of Fortunes Suvival magazine was a much better and broader based product. Unfortunately it was killed off early by the mercenary lawsuits. The money was needed elsewhere. The links upstairs are worth following to find good magazines.

I just got back from the store with the latest Popular Mechanics. Cover story: Survive Anything

Tornadoes
Hurricanes
Floods
Earthquakes

It looks like preparedness is going mainstream! How about that? :)

What, Wildfires didn't make the cut?

Can you tell me what your talking about. I used to read SOF magazine like a religion back when I was an active scout in charge of a scout squad in the Army. I stopped reading the magazine and lost track of the it when I got out of the service in the early 80's.

:D man you kinda went out on a limb,i liked the magazine due to the wide range of topics,i am not looking for a "red dawn scenario" just good reading and learning a thing or too ;)

KR a hitman was found through an SOF classified ad. The resulting lawsuit almost did in SOF magazine. Survive was not the bread and butter magazine so to save money publication was stopped. You can probably google an even better expanation.

Tony I just meant that in the years American Shooters Guide and later American Survival Guide was published in didn't grow with the times. While there were many great articles on a variety of topics I think readers became tired of the "peasant revolt gun of the month" line. Also ASG never had the readers the larger magazines had so they "tested" alot of cheap unreliable firearms most of which are no longer made.

If you like the magazine then by all means keep your back issues. I still have a dozen or so old ASG magazines I thumb through now and then. I have issues of Survive and also Survival I have kept. They are just more tools for the toolbox.

Thanks 2dogs. I do remember hearing that now that you mention it.

Thanks again,

I loved that Magazine when I was younger, is that the Magazine that always had a huge generator on the back cover. I bought it every 2-3 months, I don't think it was monthly. I currently buy Backwoodsman and Primative archer...both great sources of info and fun to read.

I sorely miss the old ASG , the thing I loved most were the Right Wing political commentaries that gave me hope during those dark clintonista years. Not to make this thread political , mind you. :)

When it started getting PC and wimpy was the writing on the wall for ASG , not too long after it went the way of the Dodo.

I still read my old issues though , they make excellent commode reading. :D

Got me to dig out my old copies too. My oldest is from 1985. Knife prices were to die for. An original BlackJack combat kukri for 149.95 or a Becker machax for 129.95.

Great magazine till they PC the format and removed the gun of the month cover. Then it was more of a backpacking mag.

When they bellied up, my subscription xferred to Backwoods which isn't a bad rag.
