Ames hardness tester

Yes, I use one. They are high quality tools. It works very well. It takes a bit of practice to operate correctly and some concentration to not overshoot the 150kg mark. Make sure not to buy one of the "S" models though, they are not for Rockwell C scale.

What JD said^^^....They are accurate and reliable used one in the past at work when a piece to be tested was in field and to large to be taken to the Lab for testing.

I’ve had a Chinese clone for a couple of years now. Works perfect!

And doesn’t take up any space. You’ll get the hang of using it very quickly.

I’ve got one as well. They have the same accuracy rating as the bench top models. I’ve had my readings checked on a friend’s benchtop, and we’re always within 1/2 Rc point.

What model do you recommend. Model 1, 2 or 3? What should I check out before I buy a used one?
Thanks for any advice.

This is interesting. I was gonna buy the grizzly one, but I’m guessing these are much cheaper. If it’s accurate, and reliable, it’s a no brainer.

Not really cheaper... I looked at the Ames website and they run in the 2k+ range.

I wasn’t expecting that! I figured it would be cheaper by the look of it! They don’t have a price on the website that I could find! The grizzly is 900 shipped!

Thanks man. That’s not a bad price

If you are in an area where freight shipping isn’t available, it can be the only option. The shipping options on the used benchtop models I was looking at were close to the price of this unit, just for the shipping.

This thread prompted me to look for one online, and I found one for 270$! I got lucky I think(if it’s not all broken) but they are out there for cheap if you look!

I think we may have been in a bidding war. I was driving home when the auction ended, or would have kept going up. That one looked nice. Congrats

Lol! Thanks joe! I was driving too, I just stopped on the side of the road to place my last bid!
Just got it today, i’ll post a review once I figure out how to use it...
