Can anyone help me with this. These are 3006 rounds. One is black tip the other is red tip. I have a couple hundred of each. Thanks in advance!

I thought black was armor piercing, I didn't know what red was. Here is what I found on the internet:
  • Black: AP
  • Black/Silver: AP Plate Test
  • Blue: Incendiary (also tracer from Argentina)
  • Green: AP from UK, Tracer from Argentina
  • Green/White: Frangible
  • Green/Tan: Frangible
  • Orange: Tracer
  • Red: Tracer (also some Incendiary from UK, and AP from Argentina)
  • Silver: Armor-piercing Incendiary
  • White: Tracer, unfinished Frangible,
  • Yellow: Observation and Proof rounds (AP from Belgium)

Post a pick of the headstamps.

Black tip 30-06 is usually WW2 vintage Armor Piercing. You rarely come across them anymore. Even back in the 1980s a box of 20 was over $50... reckon they sell for $5 a round now.

Red tip is likely tracer from the same era. Those aren't worth much, and could result in a brush fire downrange.

Yeah, if you post a picture of the headstamp it will be helpful in indentifying them.

What I’ve found…. SL 55 (St.Louis) armor piercing.

It seems I have the “silver bullet” ball ammo also. I am still finding boxes of 20 of all three of these rounds.

I assume it is safe to shoot these out of my Model 70 Safari? 😆🤣😆

They are WW2 vintage, the AP will be +P pressure but should be safe to shoot from a Model 70 no problem, just stout recoil. The full metal jacket should protect the bore. Great for shooting semis or low flying helicopters... you might even be able to take a deer hiding behind a tree, lol... honestly not much good for much else, expect zero deformation. Honestly, you'd be better off selling the AP on armslist for $80 a box. Those silvertips are worth about $10 each.

Years ago, when I was into 8mm (2 Hakims and a Mauser), I picked up a couple boxes of Nazi white phosphorus exploding incendiary... ended up liquidating my collection without even so much as testfiring any of those rifles, which I regret to this day.

Thank you. I’ll have to take an inventory of exactly what I have. I would like to find someone that will keep these in their collection. If I can’t hunt with it - I probably don’t need it. I have enough things in my safe.

Black tips and silver tips have serious collectable value. Take the money you make from that and buy some top quality hunting ammo.

My neighbor was an avid reloader who ended up with a bunch of of the old AP.
He put the bullets into new brass and powder and gave me me 50 rounds.
His answer to my question of "What am i going to do with this?"
"Go kill a car"
I still have all of it.
Afraid to screw up the barrel on my 700.
Would it?
I still haven't found a car that needs killing anyway.

IIRC, there is a copper casing around a steel core. Unlikely to effect the rifling, but if you're getting 1" groups at 250 yards I wouldn't risk it.

Carbide core.

I wanna see him get better then a 4" spread at 100yds. Most of my 5.56 is steel core. You're never getting better then 3". It's military ammo. Not Match.

They don't balance it perfect on the carbide core. It'll wobble. It's not like lead.
