An attempt at a wooden sheath

I did this as an experiment for my girlfriend's Mineral Mountain Wakizashi. I was just kind of winging it. I have virtually no woodworking skills (or tools), so it's a little sloppier than I'd like. But it was fun! It's redwood with leather and brass rings. The design was inspired by Scandinavian knife sheaths I saw in a book (can't remember the title right now). I put a patina on the rings with something called "Brass Black" by Birchwood Casey.

Gorgeous sheath! Very well done. I like the blade too.

Thanks Medusa!

Chiro: I KNOW!! And she's not even mentally unstable. I am humbled beyond words to have a hottie that just so happens to be totally cool for a girlfriend. The sword she bought was what lead to me getting involved with MMHW. At first I thought, "why does this girl want a sword? There HAS to be something wrong with her". Turns out she's just a cuter version of myself- a knifeknut in a skirt. I proposed to her two weeks ago, and she said yes! Life is grand.

Oh, Hell yes. You have an eye for complementary design. The sheath doesn't match the blade at all, but it complements it beautifully. Nice.

John,

Congrats on the wedding proposal!!

I am getting tired of you "down playing" your craftmanship

First with that killer sheath for your white water bowie and now with this IMPRESSIVE! scabbard for the sword. You need some confidence my friend because your handy work kicks ass! That scabbard is gorgeous. Does it hold the sword in snug, or does it just drop in?

Thanks Louis/Gwinny.

Louis, you're too kind as usual. I just feel kind of silly posting my stuff along side REAL craftsman. For me it's just a hobby, but it's fun! I'm actually getting better with my leather sheaths, but this was my first wood one. Maybe one day I'll offer wood and leather sheaths for the Mineral Mountain stuff.

To answer your question, I lined the inside with felt strips on the flats. Combined with a leather end-cap, it fits very snuggly. And the felt protects the blade from scratching.

Thanks again for the nice-ities. Later!

Not only is your sheath beautifully done, it's an inspiration! I've been looking for a sheath to make for a Chuck Stapel walrus clip point I got recently. I wanted a nordic style but hadn't seen one I like until I saw yours. AND since you had the guts to try it, I figure, why not? I do a lot of leather shaeths for friends, and mine are built to last as long as the knife (mostly hunters and day-carriers), but the Stapel begs for something as nice as yours.
Congrats and thanks from all us wannabees.
Mind if I write you for a tip or two if I get hung up?
Oh and BTW, if my wife ever caught me fooling around with my girlfriend's wakizashi I'd catch hell for it !! Wish you both a long and happy married life,

LOL!

Nothing can ruin a relationship quicker than messing with another woman's wakizashi!

Thanks for the super cool words, Mike. I'd be happy to share my process with you. I basically fumbled my way through it, but I'll gladly let you know what I did. Drop me an email...

Later...!
