How do these stack up ? They're USA made, and 1095 carbon. They seem like very nice looking throwers, still I'm a noob at throwing knives, but they appear to be a quality upgrade from the junk I'm using now.

I'm a noob as well, but they are the source of my throwers. They are located in Austin. The guy who makes them was inducted into the International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame in IIRC 2009, won the Texas state championship 1 or 2 x and his fiance won the female division last year. Knows his knives.

He makes 8 or 9 versions of throwers. I use his "Heavy Talons", which are 3/16" where his "Talons" are made of 1/8". You can see a picture of them in my thread titled "I keep loosing my knives"

He does a dual-end differential heat treatment where both ends are hardened but the middle has some spring in it for a little blade give when they hit.

All that being said, remember I'm a noob. I've only been throwing for about 6 weeks and don't really know much, but I like his stuff.

They have a great reputation and they are great looking knives. They definitely look like the real deal.

I've got my eye on the 1/8" 14 incher. I find that I can hurl a heavier knife more consistently, which isn't saying too much. Still it's differently heat treated and should take a beating. I think I'll have good, or better results.

He has several designs that are in the 12" - 14" range. If you'd like specs on the various knives, I could get the info for you if you want.

Depending on the weather (possibility of freezing rain tomorrow), I'll be going to his shop tomorrow or Tuesday to get some more Heavy Talons. I want to set up a target with 9 rounds on it so when I have company we can play "Knife-Tac-Toe", tic-tac-toe with knives. My experiment with the florescent green paint gave me the idea - paint 5 green and 5 red for scoring purposes.

Wound up with a 14 inch 3/16" Heavy Talon. Already seeing more consistent results. The tip deformed a bit, but sharpened out the deformation. The tips a bit stouter and sticks better.

That's great, glad you like it When I was in the shop Monday, they were out of nearly everything, except what I went in for. I got the last 4 12" Heavy Talons they had in stock. She said they had just sent a ton of knives to Blue Ridge Knives (they are going to be distributing them now) and had sold a pile at the Texas state knife throwing competition in October. Should have more available after the first of the year in the shop... She said they had a lot of blanks in the back awaiting heat treatment and finish grinding.

I'm wondering about your deformed tip. The only time I had something happen to one was when I hit a nail that had been broken off in the timber I was throwing at. Did you hit metal? Or a hard knot?

I was throwing at a tree, and it lightly stuck, and fell out. The tip was deformed, but not breakage occurred. I don't know if it struck a knot, but no harm really occurred to the knife.
