Angry at CRKT

I just opened a blister pack Desert Cruiser (brand new) and was miffed to find that the LAWKS was as loose as a goose and that the blade wobbled when fiddled with. All it needed was some tightening. But with all the tools I have (which are roughly a gazillion), not one fit the pivot screw! I even have one of those comprehensive tool kits you can get at Home Depot -- with bits coming out of one's ears -- and none would fit that, either.

Now the knife comes with an extra clip and there's a small tool that lets one screw with clip into a different part of the knife, but that tool didn't include any that would tighten the pivot screw. So I took the knife over to my dad's house. He's got way more tools than I do, but not one of his would fit this damn CRKT.

What's wrong with those people anyway? None of the bits that come with my Leatherman Charge Ti (even the optional kit). Is it some proprietary tool? I have a metric and a standard set and so far I'm a no go.

I'll check out the CRKT website and see what it says.

Why do they make it so difficult?

Looks like a Torx to me. I bet probably 90% of new knives come with this type fastener these days. Surprised you haven't ran across it before now so head down to Home Depot and pick up a set for about $6.

CRKT isn't very popular around here for a reason. They don't always have the best materials and fit and finish. I will say that they have been coming out with some better looking models recently. Now they just need to start working with some better blade steel.

It is definately torx. A small torx set comes in handy since many knife manufacturers use torx screws to attach scales and through the pivot. You can get them at sears, and they are pretty common.

That looks like it needs a Torx 6. The only use I've seen anyone have for a Torx that small is for electronics, pager programming/repair, and knife hobbyists. Go to Home Depot and get a set, they cost $5.

 I agree, almost definitely a T6.

I do have one knife with a stop pin that takes a T4. Because I wasn't sure at the time, I used it as an excuse to buy some fancy T1-T5 drivers. :D

Looks like maybe a torx 9, which is rather common for pivots(atleast with ones I have come across). A torx 6 is more common with handle and clip screws

Thanks. Yes, I ought to have some, but why they don't just put it on the end of their other tool is beyond me. Oddly, none of the ones I have work. I suspect that they're not metric, but I do have a set of such wrenches and none fit enough to bite.

CRKT has hacked me off in the past for its chisel grind designs, weight and so forth, but they've been pretty decent knives overall. The M21-04 is one of my favorites. Still too heavy for EDC, though. I have an M16-14SFA that has a chisel grind, but the hilts are wonderful.

This Desert Cruiser just sort of struck my fancy. It's huge, but it should work. For a torx, it ought to be a conventional size. I have several torx kits, but no bit seems to fit. I just asked CRKT to send me one. If they do, problem solved. If not, no more CRKTs...ever.

We'll see.

Isn't a full set of odd sized torx drivers a prerequisite for being a knife nerd. I got a nice little 6 torx driver kit from ace and i have yet to encounter a size that is not included, I think it cost me around 10 bucks.

As far as CRKT's quality goes, it seems the older models were put together a bit better than the more recent ones, but I moved away from CRKT a while ago in favor of fixed blades, although I still have an ABC blunt tip. I am still taken aback by how easily one my acquire replacement parts, with no questions asked.

When you start to get higher end knives in your hands, a CRKT just doesn't compare, but for the MSRP, it is hard to beat some of their models.
