Animal Attack!!!

Many people carry a blade for defensive purposes and it is extremely rare that one would have to use a knife on a person, but what about something more common like an animal attack? Have any of you guys and gals ever used a blade on an animal that was attacking you. I have once. A big mean black lab jumped on me and I cut him once then he ran away. It was with a small skinner blade.

Fought off a couple of dogs with a balisong. Sounds ridiculous, but as we were walking into my friend's yard they came running up the street and we didn't quite have time to make it into the house. Not sure why they weren't chained up. Thankfully they gave up pretty easily without me getting my face ripped off or anything, unfortunately I was bitten a few times. Pure luck.

There was a story on one of the gun forums a while back where a mountain lion attacked a family in a park, Califorinia I think. Grabbed the little boy and the father went after it with his pocket knife. Don't think it ever said what type of knife.

I heard that too. I think they showed a picture and it looked like a Spyderco Caly.

i recently dispatched of a very large extremely deadly snapping turtle :D with my trusty BK9 that had wandered up on the shore of my favorite fishing hole to sunbath LOL..
i hate them damn things.

Being British out here in Canada, means bears and cougar probably don't spring to my mind as something I'm going to encounter as much as they should, hiking or being in the back woods in the UK means a sighting of a dear or fox if your lucky and your not in any real danger there.

Out here Bear, and Cougar are the largest preditors to be concerned about. I do consider this when carrying in the back woods... but the knife would have to be just about the last line of defence. Take a look at how strong this bear is compared to a man...

(caution there is quite a bit of screaming in this vid)

Correctly used bear spray, or where legal a shotgun would have to be first line of defence from an oncoming attack for us, if it came to close quarters any blade that is stable and not going to slip from your grip. Something with a hand guard large enough to prevent your hand slipping on a stabbing motion or enough friction in the grip for the same.

That's why we got the Bowie, Jim designed it for killin 'bars'.

My choice, i'd go with a cold steel Assegai / short shaft.

I never used my knife on anyone/thing but, could've. My old lab was tied up in the yard and my ass hole city hood neighbor who was living with his mother in the suburbs would always let his rotweiler out without a leash.. I had made friends with this dog but, it had a nasty attitude. Towards other dogs mainly. One day I heard my dog cryng outside and this Rot had my dog by the throat. I pulled its collar and kicked it and it wouldnt let go so picked up a steel Tonka dump truck and slugged him with it... A few small cuts on my dog was all. The rot had a small cut that I, being an animal lover, bandaged up the following day...

So you did have a knife? - but went with a nearby "impact" weapon, good thinking mate! And good you helped the Rott the next day as well.

I was in a "furball" with 3 smallish pit bulls and a Great Dane, tackling them rolling down a short hill when they set upon the Dane i was walking for a friend in a park one evening. Had a Berreta 92 in my belt [front, no holster] under my shirt, round in the chamber. I started pounding on the 2 that were biting the Dane with my fists / me and the owner of the PBs got them separated. I never pulled out my Beretta yet in the passing weeks i started to regret that as the owner of the PBs was so irresponsible that night, i was stewing....but now in retrospect i did all the right things at the right times, the Dane only had one semi-serious bite wound about 3/8" deep. If i HAD a knife at that time things might have been different, maybe not.

What i came away with was one needs to get rolling in the situation before a deadly weapon comes out. Definitely would want a staff or impact weapon first, or OC spray.

Killing a snapping turtle that's sunning itself on the land is pretty mean. I know they can take off a finger or hand, but come on. What did you do, behead it?

I have never used the knife as of yet but I was attacked by a huge German Shepard that bit me on my leg pretty good. He left a huge bruise. I see the dog at least once per month at work. Every time the Dog is around my hand is now on my knife.

i drove the knife thru its shell several times and then chopped away until id removed its head. the bad part was that when i first drove the BK9 down thru its shell it turned and headed straight for the pond. if it wasnt for the handle sticking up out of the water with a lanyard attached as it attempted to swim away, id have probably lost the knife and the wounded critter. when i grabbed it and gave it a yank/toss, the turtle landed back up on the shore with the knife still shoved clear thru it, and it was mad as hell, so i then dealt with it.

and you might think its mean, but we try to keep the snapper population to a minimum in the ponds. my kids swim there, and i do fish it regularly.

Mmmmm, turtle soup/stew is gooood. Hope you made some with it. I had it when i was a kid & it tasted just like beef stew.

i havent had turtle soup for many many years. my great grandma was the only person ive known who knew how to prepare it, and it was delicious.
the turtle i dispatched of was 2' across, so it was a big beast. i have no problems with the little guys, and leave them be, but if given a chance, the big beasts get shot. ive had stringers of fish destroyed while fishing, so yeah, i hold a grudge against them. good riddance

I got an alligator snapping turtle the other day. I don't know how to prepare it either so I gave it to someone who does.

never so far, on bigger critters and i hope to keep it that way. lots of times with a machete on nasty aggressive snakes.

only things i run into is coyotes, wild dogs, occasional black bear, gators, snapping turtles, wildcats, cotton mouth snakes, eastern rattlers, pygmy rattlers, coral snakes....that's about it, but a knife is not so great on any of them. i'd prefer a big long stick on most of those, to chase 'em away, other than the black bear, and coyote for them i prefer a firearm.

most run the other direction when i run into them. which is a good thing, imho. one that scares me the most are those cotton mouths. lots of them around here, and if you are between the water and said snake, it will come right at you to get to that water, when you spook it. only critter other than humanized(fed by morons) ones i've ever ran into that will come right at you to get where it wants to go to feel safe. that's why i carry a big machete. first i try to jump and get out of the way, but i've had a couple come at me and try to strike. i'm all for live and let live stuff unless hunting for food.....but i just don't like snakes. never have and if they don't scatter i put 'em down, and i don't feel bad about it either.

edit part...for any brave kids reading this site and this post......these snakes are lightning fast and poisonous. do not go out and try to behead snakes for fun....it would be really dangerous and stupid. it takes allot of practice to hit one without getting bit, and they can jump pretty far. the smart thing to do is stay away.
