This is steel from scrapyard sale.

C 0.55-0.65
Mn 0.6-0.9
Si 1.5.1.9
P 0.030
S 0.035
Cr 0.7-1.0
Ni 0.35

I m getting 1´´ round bars pound for 1 dollar. I think its fairly good.

Does anyone knows if there is AISI equivallent? Notice tight tollerance for legure, this is designated tool steel, unlike 5160 and alike, which we use because they among other things are also good for knives.

Thanks

Jaro

5160 has like 0-15 -0.35 Si and this stuff has 1.5-1.9 percent of Si.

But it looks to be 5160 based.

I don't recognize the exact alloy, but it is the same as 9260 with chromium added.
HT as 5160 or 9260 and it should do fine. Add a little soak time to be safe.
I'm sure mete or Kevin will have a more definitive answer.

It's closest to 9260 +Cr or 5160 + Si.Even the Ni is in significant amounts . We have no standard AISI like that. But if it makes good knives , use it !!

Aha. I dug around and it seems to have been tool version of local 5160 steel, but it has tighter legure tollerances. I was told that blades for high speed skating (the skates) were made from this stuff. Those are only like 3 mm thick.

I got to try it.
