I recently picked up an old ship builders Axe. The handle is in good shape... although it’s loose. I’m not sure if I would decrease its value if I restore it or not.
I think it has some value, but I’m not sure. The blade is 6” and handle is 32” and looks original.
It’s stamped “hartum proud
New York “ although it’s hard to read. But it looks like that and the stamp is in a triangle shape.
I’ll try and attach some pictures but I’m not sure I know how to, and if they’ll show up.
It looks old. If anybody has any input on it I’d appreciate
It. The head is in daily good shape as well.
Regards

Nice find. Welcome to Bladeforums.
Horton & Arnold New York Mast axe

Any axe of that era with it's original handle and patina will always have some value destroyed if it is messed with. In any mature area of antique collecting the more original an object is the more it is worth historically and monetarily. It would be a 100% rookie move to do anything to this axe but preserve it as is. If you want to mess with an axe there are uncountable numbers of them that are good quality but have little or no value destroyed when they are polished and re-handles by the legions of "geniuses" out there participating in whatever is fashionable and trendy.
