i have been searching the threads looking for advice on anvils and that led me to ebay. i ay have found a likely candidate. it's item 6273050990 its a red japanese anvil. I don't really know much about anvils so any advice i could get would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I am not familiar with this anvil but there are several things to consider.

1) If its is a cast steel anvil and you can get it cheap I would give it a try it

2) If its cast iron I wouldnt waste my time on it. They are too soft.

3) Harbor Freight retail stores sometimes carry a 110 lb cast steel anvil made in Russia for about 80 bucks. Its a great starter anvil for the money. Granted the horn is crude and needs a good bit of grinding to be usable but overall its not bad.

My 2 cents worth

Like mike said if its cast steel i would go for it,I couldnt find any info about jet anvils online.Dont pay too much for it if you get serious your gonna want something heavier.
A word of caution on ebay there are some real shady people sellind junk cast iron anvils (the one from HF) for way more than they should, pay attention to the sellers feedback, instructions. One guy claimed someone left a bunch of anvils in the basement of the house he bought......look at the feedback who leaves behind 100 anvils???? Plus they ship direct too. Also if an anvil is painted its a good sign soomeone tried to cover something up.I paid 200 for a decent 100 lb anvil in october cause i was in a hurry, I just got a 155 lb anvil in way better shape and its a big difference.Just be patient I found my big anvil in an antique store, didnt have to pay for shipping.Good luck.

Hi Dozuki. I've been saving up for a little while now to get an anvil. I totally agree with the other guys about the cast iron anvils "STAY AWAY FROM THEM":thumbdn: :thumbdn: :thumbdn: If you can afford it go with a new anvil. There are a few to choose from if you decide to go new. There is only one manufacturer that I am aware of that makes a forged anvil and that is Peddinghaus. They range in size up to 275 lbs. Another good one is the Amercan made Nimba, it is a cast steel anvil and they have 3 models that go up to 450 lbs. And the last but not least best of the best in my opinion is the Swedish made Kohlswa and they have several different size and models. If I had to buy only one and money was no object then I would personally go with the Swede's. But I am still sitting on the fence between the German Peddinghaus and the Nimba. Besides if you go new you know exactly wjhat your getting. Sometimes the auctions arent such a good deal. Oh one last thing. When you get an anvil make sure you get a black smiths anvil and not a ferriers anvil. A ferriers anvil is for forming and making horse shoes. It wont put up with the kind of work you need to do for knife making. Just my 2 cents worth.:)

I've been eyeing this guy for a while, anvils and price seem decent but the shipping is a killer. I would like to replace my homemade anvil this year although it works. Tax money comming!.
I'de rather just buy it than bid, waste too much time.

Hey guys. I emailed JET Tools and asked about the anvil. The emailed reply was that it was 'cast alloy, non-hardened'.

Hey BIGBEAR,
Have you found a distributor for Kohlswa anvils? I've got a 96#er and I was looking for some thing BIGGER.They have great bounce and,as hard as they are, they hold up really well when you miss the mark!1
