I have an Alec, it is my first anvil in my shop. Previously I had used more typical anvils while taking classes or at local blacksmithing events.
I really like it so far. I have it mounted in a stand that I built using 2x4's and over 100lbs of sand. The anvil sits on a silicone pad that has a layer of silicone under it. The noise level is low but the responsiveness to hammer blows has been just fine.
It is small, but if you're choosing between Atlas and Alec that's not a factor. I have not been limited by the size when it comes to knifemaking. I do like the horn on the Alec because I like to use it to shape my handles and fingergrips.
Overall, I'd recommend it.
