New to the forums and am buying my first Benchmade knife from another forum user. Beautiful 550 SHG Griptilian! Very excited and my question is are there any people out there who have used and abused one of the 154cm Grips and came out bragging? If so ide love to hear it!

It, along with the Endura being some of the most popular and widely used knives definitely sees a lot of hard use.
The folks I know certainly will use a Griptilian to cut sod, open bags of whatever needs opening, and cutting wood with occasional light prying.

To test the lock I've used my trainer to do chin-ups from a tree branch, using the spine of the knife, and did deliberately wrong angle stabs upward into telephone poles to stress the lock. The blade stuck into the poles, despite being blunt.
Since I only use it for training drills, I decided to spine whack the hell out it too...and it's still solid as when it arrived.

If you ever manage to break one, you've gone and done something monumentally stupid. :D

Awesome to hear! Seems as though not to many folks have stories about the torcher they have put the BM through here...... 107 views so far and only one reply... come on guys!

I am not too hard on my Grip because I have my fixed blade EDCs for that, but I have used it for some light yardwork, chopping some thin branches, opening bags of mulch and salt for my pool and it has held up very well. It is a great knife and by far my favourite EDC folder.

They are good knives for the money. I have three total, hence getting rid of one.

If you check out YouTube, you can find all sorts of abuse videos, some of them less useful than others. I think there is even one of some guy standing on one till it breaks.

I think plenty of us keep a Grip or Mini Grip around to beat on. They are excellent cutters, but have steel liners and can definitely hold up to anything reasonable.

Got 551 recently myself, do ya'll think it would be a good defensive knife?

I would venture to say that this is more of a Prac Tac question. I will have to repeat everyone else's sentiment, this is a great tool for the money.

It makes a great defensive blade, if the need arises, due to the blade shape and geometry. That being said, I would HIGHLY recommend getting some training. Without practice, trying to deploy one under stress is not as easy a task as most think. The handle is rough enough that it takes a little bit more time to to extract it from your pocket. Practice, training, and the mindset that you are about to plunge 3.5" of sharpened steel into somebody is NEEDED to effectively defend yourself.

Just remember, no one wins in a knife fight.
