My local Costco has an 8 piece Shun Sora (6 knives, 1 block, 1 honing rod) for $250. Couldn't find any solid reviews, except the Costco item has poly-something handles. Anybody has used this line from Shun?

Not that specific line, but my Shun Premiere 8" chef knife is my favorite at home and work.

You're better off getting individual knives. All anyone needs is a chefs knife, paring knife, and maybe a bread knife if you really want one. I really like my Tojiro DP 210 mm gyuto (~$55) and Victorinox 8" chefs knife (~$35). For paring knives I use a set of Opinel in carbon steel (2 pack was around $14). There's really no need for a knife block set.

It's true.. I've worked in commercial kitchens for over a decade and a good 8-10" chefs knife and a 3-4" paring knife will suffice for the vast majority of food preparation.

Ah! That is certainly something I did not consider - individual knives. Thanks for the inputs. :-)

For 250$ you can get a pretty nice chef knife/ gyuto and a quality paring knife. Depending on your sharpening equipment budget in a stone or two and you are in decent shape. Russ

Like everyone has said already, I'd just buy knives individually. I own the Shun Sora 8 inch Chef's Knife, and love it! I'd definitely recommend it on it's own.

Echoing others, only get what you need vs a set. I worked in food service for over ten years and now have a mobile sharpenig service.
I rarely use a chefs knife at home. It's usually a santoku, utility, and a serrated knife.
Also, I think the Soras feel "cheap" in the hand compaired to other models they offer.
