I have a Sentry floor safe that a friend gave me. He didn't know the combination so I need to figure out how to open it and then I can set the combination myself.
It's about 2 foot tall and 1 1/2 foot wide and deep.
I don't even know the dial sequence, lol.
If I knew that I was thinking about rigging a microphone on it and hooking it up to my pc so I can crank it up loud and seeing if I could hear the tumblers fall.
Any tips you can give, short of usin dynamite, will be appreciated!
Take care and have a grand week end!

My local locksmith charges a minimum of $12.50 to open the safe. I think that's based on 1/2 hour of work, so if it takes 4 hours, he would charge $100. That's if you bring it to the shop - add a $45 trip charge to come to your house. I'm not sure how much a notary public costs but that might be easier and cheaper.
I copied this from the Sentry site: http://www.sentrysafe.com/CustomerService/FindYourCombination.asp

Lol, I'd gotten some ideas from movies. One from that Deniro flick, The Heist I think it was. He took the dial off and drilled a small hole in the cover so he could look through and see the tumblers as they fell into the notch.
I think I'll take Frank's advice. :)
I've been to Sentry's web site and I didn't find that info. Thanks for diggin around for me and comin up with it, Frank!!
Take care guys!!

Safecracking is pretty much a lost art these days. I recall seeing a training movie when I was in the police academy in 1968. Two safe burglars volunteered to do a demonstration, and "peeled" a big document safe in about 5 minutes.

We had a couple of funny cases here:

Some enterprising burglars stole an oxy-acetylene rig from the maintenance compound, and were going to use it to burn the safe the food service used.

They burned through the lock on the office door, and applied heat to the safe. Unfortunately, they didn't know they had a brazing head on the rig, instead of a cutting head. This got the safe very, very hot, but didn't melt anything. Meanwhile, the burned-through door started to smoulder inside the wall, and set the fire alarm off.

Another enterprising lad (one of our students!) broke into the off-campus housing office, and removed the 36" safe inside. He dragged the thing down about 50' of sidewalk, and manhandled it into the back of his import truck. He then took it to his apartment (???) where he proceeded to beat, bang, and pry the thing for several hours to no effect whatever.
Panicking, he dragged it back out to the street, where he attempted to drop it down a manhole. It got stuck. Neighbors reported all this rude activity, and our erstwhile burglar was arrested.
The kicker- the safe contained only room keys for the dorms, quite useless, and was normally left unlocked. The guy twiddled the knob before stealing it, thus locking it.

Well you could order a book and read up on it...

Safe cracking book

Although the name of the web site is a chuckle.

Frank got it right.

I worked at sentry for 12 years,my wife still does.

I was going to offer to save you the fee and hassle and just have you tell me the ser.# and have her look it up. But....she said she won't do that for some unknown person on the net.I guess thats a good thing.

I always got a laugh out of the listening to the tumblers thing! They're just 3 disks with slots in them, nothing to hear!! and if there was don't people think the safe makers wouldn't just put some sort of "clicker" in there to mess that up?

Anyways look for a small brown sticker with black numbers,( white lables are on the newer ones I'm guessing yours is an older one) those are the ser.#. If yours are missing,I would not bother with paying a locksmith. Most likely he'll drill a hole in the door and punch out the tumblers and drive wheel.Thats just to get it open. Now you'll have to pay for a new door also,I'm not sure Sentry even makes pipe safes anymore,or if they still stock the doors.

You CAN NOT set the combo to one you chose. You can by moving the drive pin change the combo, but can not PICK the numbers you want.

Any problems or for info on changing the combo.Let me know.
