A few months back my dad gave me his old Stanley 199 with a few spare blades. It's an oldie with a lot of wear on it and the words 'made in England' stamped in the handle.

These days I find that I reach for it more and more in favour of my larger SAK's when there is a heavy duty cutting task to be done.

I love the way I can really abuse that thing plus the fact that it is fun to hone a slightly dull blade on some cardboard instead of replacing it it with a fresh blade.

Any other Stanley 199 fans out there?

That’s pretty cool. I never knew they made any in England.

I do conveyor belt work for a living, replacing, splicing, and maintaining belts at the coal mines, rock quarries, paper and steel mills etc.

The Stanley 199 is the knife of choice for most of the guys I work with. I normally will have at least 2 or 3 Stanley's in my hand box as well as a fresh pack of blades, some of which ive had for 6 or 7 years. But I also keep an 18mm OLFA knife on me as well for more flexible work 😉.

Carried a Stanley 199 daily for many years prior to the release of the first generation of the 10499 decades ago.

RE: the 10499 Quick Change, having the ability to quickly switch from various hook blades (11-939, 11-961, 11-983) to a Wharncliffe blade depending on application, or just to quickly expose a fresh edge with and end-to-end swap of a blade made this version one of the most significant, inexpensive tool improvements I remember. Additionally, the ability to quickly unload/reload makes it a quick affair to remove blade, make a few strokes on a stone, steel, cardboard, etc. to refresh the apex and/or change the geometry.

EDIT:
The 10-049 was/is another great from the past.

I love the humble utility knife, Stanley 99 in particular. I like the retractable blade and pocketable feature. The last few years a Folding Husky has seen a lot of carry. They are very very effective cutters. I keep one out by the recycle bin, another in the car trunk emergency kit, and the Husky is in the kitchen drawer when its not clipped on me.
