Am new to survival communtiy and was looking for ideas for a first time blade. Really like the Fehrman blades. Any ideas?

what will you use it for? you looking for folder or fixed? Will it be around water(stainless or carbon) We need more input before we can answer your question.

I would advise seeking out a knifeshow(or any other place where blades abound) and picking up(not buying) anything and everything that seems interesting to you.Get a feel of what feels good to you. Ask questions of makers and be honest in your abilities and needs. I would recomend staying away from really big knives till you have some solid experiance with knives though. Small cuts teach lessons but a wild swing with a large knife can maim or kill you. I speak from experiance here. As to the Ferhman blades, they look pretty solid and cabable of serving in a survival role. The steel he uses is excellent but not stainless so if I were you I would opt for the coated models. Have fun :D

I am looking for a blade that would serve well in the deepest darkest jungles of Tenn. and Alabama. Any input as far as experience with popular blades would be appreciated.

Goatsoup,

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I just saw your post today.

I would probably repeat what some of the other guys are saying here. I'm sure our blades would serve you well but exactly what you need depends on what exactly do you want to do?

If you are new to "survival camping" I probably wouldn't recommend that you rush out and buy a 15" knife. Big knives can be amazingly versatile tools but require more skill and care to use.

Do you plan to hack through brush? build shelters? split wood? wittle other tools? clean small game?

Personally in the "woods" I carry a 7.5" blade, and a small swiss army knife. But it all depends on what you want to do.

Good Luck!

I can only mirror what Eric has written here.

I carry a 7" blade by Camillus, the Becker BK-7. It takes care of any chores that I'd care to use a knife for. Heavier chores go to the Khukuri that I also carry, but I'm not into falling trees, so those chores are moderate at worst. I also carry a SAK and a 3" linerlock blade for the less demanding jobs like opening an MRE pouch. :D

I have a number of setups, most of them are cheap cause I believe in cheap knives!

I always remember that people who still live in jungles use the cheapest crap knives and their lives depend on them.

as far as survival knives go, you'll need to assess the environment you might be using such a tool. If it is desert without any trees a 15" blade might not be the best choice. if it is a dense forest maybe an axe is best.

for day hikes I carry a 4 1/2 master hunter by cold steel and a sak trailmaster. for long camping trips and such I carry a $6. machete can do everything I need along with a sak trailmaster.

Hello

Don't know much about "the deepest darkest jungles of Tenn. and Alabama", but my personnal experence of the jungle ( Chiapaas and Peten) have taught me that a good local and cheap machete is the best 'chopping tool" you can have. The other thing I will recommend is not to buy a to long blade, (the one I used was 16 inch long), long blade are heavier and sometimes difficult to use. For small task, I will recommend a good puukko and the essential SAK (the one you feel secure with).
An another Extreme important tool is a good sharping stone (Arkansas one are unbeatable). For the machete handle I prefer wood or micarta
coz plastic can slip and then ...
Another thing not to forget is the sheath, lether are beautiful but
jungle humidity is his worst enemy, prefer synthetic.

Have a good trip;) ;)
