Any thoughts on the Torus CNC 2x72 Grinder?

Hey all,

I am looking at getting a 2x72 grinder, and looking at a bunch of options. But one that poped up on a search was the Torus CNC Grinder.

Has anyone used one or locked at it? Any thoughts?

For $720 shipped it looks like a bargain, and a decent grinder. Add $300 or so for a 2hp 3 ph motor and Chinese VFD and you'll have a good package for around $1K. While I personally much prefer the Reeder system, it's also a bit more expensive.

Well tell us what you ordered - you didn't get his 1 hp 1ph motor did you?
Nope. I asked him about motors and bought a motor he recommended (2HP) and a VFD from the House list. Interestingly, the motor was also on that list. The motor and VFD arrive tomorrow. This was the list I was referring to SEE NEXT POST. I grabbed the Iron Horse from Automation.

The maker was very up-front, and responsive.

If you search "Housemade Resources" you will find the supplier and info pages that Rob was talking abpout. Lots of good info and stuff on that site.
Housemade Forge Resources also has a lot of good info.

Just an update.

So I received the grinder. I am in the middle of wiring the VFD and motor, but I have to say a few things.

He says he assembles and tests them before shipping... and I didn't expect assembled meant it was entirely built and shipped in a giant box. It was. And the fit and finish was very, very good. And the oddities are like a nice pouch with the drive wheel instead of a box or bag. In the box were bolts to screw to mount the base to a work surface (too short for me but nice; my worktop is 1.5 inches thick) and screws to mount the motor I didn't buy from him, and two little notebooks. That is not something I expected. Oh, and a cheap wrench set was included just in case I didn't have what was needed.

Oh, and switching from horizontal to vertical is absurdly easy and toolless.

One oddity was that it said it included: a Flat Platen attachment w 1.5" x 16.5" aluminum tooling bar, an adjustable Work Table attachment w 1.5" x 16.5" aluminum tooling bar, and an 8-inch contact wheel attachment. I didn't expect the contact wheel to come on ANOTHER tool arm. That isn't a big bonus, but it was a bonus that wasn't listed. Now I have some easy swaps and don't need to worry about moving things between arms. Oh, and the arms are solid aluminum.

It was the little areas that he spent time on that I had never seen on any industrial-type equipment. This felt more like buying a nice CKF knife or a nice 1911. The little extras wow you.

I was incredibly impressed.

Now I gotta get a lunch break to finish that wiring, bolt it down and get it running!

Tracking is rock solid and easy and rapid to adjust. Alignment is solid and everything is tight in the right way.

The fit and finish? Absurdly good. I meant it when comparing it to a CKF knife, or maybe a Shirogorov or a good 1911. Smooth grinds and mills. No dings. Nothing lose. No sharp edges. No ugly welds. Just tight enough and everything exact. With extras that just make it easier.

Honestly I have used a lot of different equipment in my life. The build quality here was just at a different level.

I ran the belts after squaring everything and did some throw away metal. Tonight I hope to take the next step.

Seems solid after the first blank first ground. Can update after I have had it a while. No issues. With how tight the build is I didn't expect any issues.

Happen to have any contact info for torus? Been trying to get ahold of them via email with no luck.

It was great talking to you. Thanks a ton for the order man! Thanks to Rob, I've been absolutely inundated with inquiries and orders! Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled but it's been an absolute whirlwind the past few days. I was wondering what happened. I knew it likely wasn't my prowess with SEO or Google ads. I'm a novice at online marketing so I figured it must have been a word of mouth scenario. If you're reading this and have tried to reach out and I've missed your message, I'll try to get back to you as soon as I can. Rich

So um, you know that IG post I did? It did ok for me; the stats are 2,761 People Reached, although only 87 likes... need to work on that next time... so... you may get a few more calls lol. :p

And in case anyone is wondering, no I didn't do anything I wouldn't have done for any other product I like, making no money on either my grinder or my IG...

I ordered a Torus CNC 2x72 last week and received it a few days ago. Super stoked about the quality!

I stumbled across Rich's website while surfing the web researching 2x72's. I appreciated that he's a one man shop, and took note from his Instagram page how hard he's worked to refine his design up to the point where his current model is at. There's nothing cheaply thrown together or poorly thought out on this machine.

I thought the price was very reasonable for a tilting belt grinder that comes with a large contact wheel, platen, large work rest and drive wheel. I purchase the full package without the motor, and then ordered a $200 3phase 2hp motor, and the cheap $100 Chinese inverter recommended by Housemade Resources. $1,200 (before shipping costs) for a variable speed belt grinder of this quality seemed like a pretty solid deal to me.

Rich was great to work with. He responded quickly to questions, and had the grinder at my doorstep in Alaska within a week after ordering. Pretty sure that these will become harder to get as the word spreads!

Thanks for the great review Dan! Glad to hear it got there safe and sound. It had a long distance to travel to get to you in Alaska from Illinois. Anyway, I'm at the shop early again this morning trying to stay ahead of things. Hope you have a good Memorial Day weekend.

Rich
