Hey guys,
I rarely make it out of the shop talk area, but I find myself in need of some advice from you leather pros, especially anyone who used a tippmann boss.
I got a really big leather order in and decided hand stitching was out if the question so I picked up a used tippmann. I know how moody they are but figured I could handle it. I feel like I've almost got it there but I keep having the same issue. It seems like a little loop from the top thread keeps getting hooked by the bobbin shuttle and jams up the whole works. Even if I have a good run, it happens sooner or later.
Seems to happen no matter how the tension is adjusted could it be timing?
I'm sewing pretty light leather, 2 pieces of 3-4 oz leather, having better luck with heavier thread, 277 but want to punch it down to 207 if I can.
Any advise is appreciated.
The loop I'm talking about is the blue thread in the photo.

Not an expert by any means, but this usually happens when I get lazy when making the stitch stroke.
You need to make a firm stroke, all the way down and all the way up.
The only other time I've had this occur is if the needle does not go through all layers of leather and comes out the side when I sew too close to the edge.
Hope this helps.

^^^^^ Like he said, Full stoke up and Full stroke down. That is the case of many "Tippmann problems". Make sure you hit the stops in both directions EVERY STITCH.

I swear I thought I was doing full pulls, but now I'm really getting after it and it's running pretty good. Thanks guys!
The stitches look great on thick stuff, but on the thin 2/3 oz stuff I'm getting the knot showing on the topside between every stitch. Think the 207 thread is too much?

Just loosen your thread tension on the thinner leather. That's on the thread from the spool not the bobbin. This is the secondary tensioner and the only one I adjust once everything is set up. Try using a few craps to get the right tension.

There are some pretty good videos online and Tippmann has a downloadable manual that is worth having.

Yes sir. Got the manual, watched every video I could find before bugging you guys. I was surprised how little was out there considering how long the Boss has been around.
It does it even with the tension backed all the way off. Now here is a concern, the primary tensioner (the front one) is a bit stiff even without any tension on the spring. Definitely doesn't spin freely, can this be oiled? Is there a way to disassemble it and clean?

It can be disassembled. On page 10 in the manual is the schematic and shows the order for putting it back together just in case your not sure.
