THe name of this thread pretty much says it all: Has anybody ever made knives from O2 tool steel? This is an oil hardening steel listed in my manuals as being for reamers and other industrial cutting tools. Looks like a usuable hardness around 59-62. I'd appreciate any info.

Composition is:

C 0.85 - 0.95
Si 0.10 - 0.40
Mn 1.9 - 2.1
P 0.030
S 0.030
Cr 0.20 - 0.50
V 0.05 - 0.60

I've heard of it, thats about it. People say that it's not made any more and you can't get it so......

I've got about 100lbs of the stuff and we've used it to make damascus blades combined with O1. O2 steel is still widely produced in Europe at least... in Germany it has the Material number 1.2842 and the DIN number 90MnCrV8.

I tried searching and there's only one reference to O2 in the context of Damascus. I was wondering if anyone has made a knife from O2?

I had a 12 foot x 3/4 inch round of mystery steel that i had analysed; seemed to be something very much like O2; 1077 plus manganese. I made a couple of knives out of it before trading it off to another maker for some 1084. The Qua O2 was very stiff under the hammer and a heck of a lot of work to use. Hardened very well in oil; very difficult to anneal, made a very keen blade.
