I was wondering if anybody knew what knife the host uses? I just watched three episodes for the first time and I did not seem half bad. It appeared he used the same knife in the episodes. Jsut curious what it is. It somewhat resembles my SOG Northwest Ranger but with a bit longer blade.

He has used various knives, including a cheapy clip point, partially serrated Gerber Gator. Link.

He uses a custom made knife, usually of the expensive variety. ($200+). If you want a down to earth knife, use what Les Stroud uses. ($50-$60 or less). :)

Erik,

I may be way off, but seems like the last quote I saw on his knife from the custom maker was more like 700 bucks when exchange rate was taken into account  Too rich for me, especially when there are so many custom makers on this board who will do the same quality work for literally half the price.

Woah - check this out:

"NB. My apologies but the S4 model is no longer available or branded as the Signature Bear Grylls Knife in any way."

It is 400 pounds - which is about 700 bucks. It was more when it had bear's name on it.

I paid a bit less than that for it in 2008. I collect survival knives. Could be that since the signature model is no longer avialable, it may increase in value. Personally, I can think of many knives that will do as well for much less. It is a fine little knife, though.

I believe it is and indentation to give you better grip when using the chest lever grip. Just like on the knife made by Bushcraft Northwest.

Nice feature actually. Not 700 nice, but nice.

butter knife. as in the one at the hotel in his room where he stays at night during shoots.
but seriously that knife of his looks realy good but waay too expensive for what it is.

Ahh....we got to post 6 before someone mentioned Les Stroud and post 14 before someone mentioned a hotel room in a Bear Grylls thread.

Maybe next time.

I believe it's a survival indicator.
You use the squared edges to measure the gravity of your situation.
When your fingers are tired and sore, and you get to the point where it hurts to use the knife, that's when you know you're into some serious knife use, and are really "surviving". When your hands get so numb that it doesn't hurt to use it any more, that's when you know you're in trouble.
'Course I could be mistaken:o

It's really pretty sad. Bear seems like a good enough guy. I don't understand the need to trash him.

One thing I like about BG is that he is pretty straight in his interviews about what his show really is, or is not. He also states that he admires what Mears does and has nothing but good things to say about him, regardless of Mears expressing dislike and disdain for Bear.

dang, if I wanted to be 'down to earth', I'd have to ditch almost all my knives then.

ya know I realy do like the guy I just think that there was a point when he coulda come out and said this is a simulated situation and I will not teach you any further by staying out here overnight. so off I go.
He does things that warrent a break to say the least. so kudos to that.
