Anybody know where I can get Rowan wood?

I have a buddy who (for reasons which are, I suppose, his own) would like me to put a Rowan handle on one of his pieces. I've looked over most of the Wood Supply links that I normally use, but no one seems to have Rowan...I guess it's just not exotic enough.

Anybody got any thoughts on who might stock it?

TIA,

Kal

where does this wood grow? i've never heard of it, and i only use exotics on my handles. maybe talk to your friend, and ask him where he found it?

Rowan is a (supposedly--I don't think I ever saw one when I was there) common tree throughout the UK and a good bit of Europe. It's not widely used in carpentry, to my knowledge, but it's been associated with Celtic history and their religious beliefs and practices. More than that, I can't say, unfortunately...

If it's not doable, I guess it's not doable...I can let him know, and we'll go with something else, I'm sure. Just wanted to make sure that somebody out there wasn't sitting on a heapin' hunka Rowan logs, just itchin' to get rid of a few.

Oh, the usual...growth in concentric rings, burns, floats, bark on the outside...

But seriously, my experience is pitifully limited with this stuff, carpentry-wise. I had always thought of it as a soft wood, which I guess would be fine, since the chap that wants the knife won't be using it in hard, daily use. I'm guessing that it'll be more for display/ceremonial use than anything else.

So, now that I've had my moment of being completely un-helpful...got any?

nah, don't use a soft wood. it won't come out good, and won't finish well. soft woods crack and check and have end grain that really shows. soft woods are fine for carpentry, but really aren't for knife handles. show him some different kinda of exotics, and see if he likes some other ones!
