The Stormy Kromers are on sale right now at Cabelas and I just placed an order for one. I'm going hunting this weekend and I would like to know if it'd be worth it to bump up the shipping ($5 more) to get the cap here this weekend. We will be hiking/hunting in 60-65 degree weather and I don't know how warm these hats are. If any one has one, could you tell me a bit about it. Also, are they too warm for 65 degree weather?

I've been wearing them for years, great caps. They are suitable for winter activity, way too warm for weather in the sixties though.

I have one, I really like it, I just don't get much opportunity to wear it much, since it doesn't get very cold where I am...:(

I clicked your Cabela's link, i was shocked at the color. I have a brick red one and a pine green one, they're pretty old, I actually thought those were the only colors they made them in.

Read somewhere that this is not the original company making these, so may be the reason for the new colors.
Friend of mine wears them, but didn't know the story of their design.

I've got one and it's great, but I agree that the wool one would be too warm for this weekend.

I've got a red and black plaid one, probably be picking up a few more.

They're the height of fashion in the UP.

I have 3 including one of the new rancher hats in blaze orange. They are simply awesome, I wear them everyday from mid fall to late spring. They are warm, probably too warm for a 60-65 degree weekend.

Before they got trendy they were quite inexpensive, back fifteen years or so they were only about twelve bucks and were made by the same outfit that made welder's skull caps.. At the time the only colors I ever saw were red and black. Wouldn't mind having an orange one for hunting season, unfortunately the sale at Cabelas doesn't have one to fit my big square head.

I have one in oiled tan cotton.
Was surprised to find when it arrived that what I thought are fold-down earflaps aren't.
Like it, but not as good for covering my ears as a roughly similar field cap from Filson.

Stormys are "Sunday-go-to-meet'n" wear in my part of the U.P....and for every other time too. They're warm-definitely not for temps in the 60s.

DPris -- Stormy's (ear bands) are only meant to be pulled down to cover the top part of your ears. They're plenty warm for most. That said, there's a Rancher model now that has flaps 2 inches longer/deeper than the original.

Apparently Stormy & his wife invented the engineer's cap too.

i have one that i like alot. its red and black. i usually wear watch caps but like having the bill when the sun is low in wintertime. like it, but dont think id rush order, it can wait one more weekend :) .

I have 2 wool ones I bought in the 1980's at a Tractor Supply store. They are really awesome cold weather/snowing and blowing hats! Good in particular if you wear glasses in stormy winter weather. I ordered one in orange a few years ago from Cabelas and it was not as sturdy or as warm as my older ones, so I sent it back.

Just brought mine out for the season yesterday. It's my all-time favorite cap.

Schlot,
While I like the looks & fit, and I'm not totally dissatisfied with mine, those flaps were a disappointment.

I have two ancestors of the current Filson cap design that folds down. I've never seen them in WWII uniform photos & don't know where they were originally used, issued, or worn.
Both are tagged "L Chessler, June 24, 1941, and Phila Q. M. Depot", along with various stock & spec numbers. They're identical, heavy OD duck on the outside & thick wool lining on the inside. I picked 'em up at a local surplus store about 25 years ago, both unused.
They're still in excellent condition, they're both highly treasured, and I wear one or the other on cold outings in the open cockpit UTV. I can fold the flaps down halfway to completely cover my ears or all the way down to my neck & throat. I've also worn one several times while on long winter walks, and when the wind blows cold & hard those flaps just flat save my ears.

The first time I came across an add for a Kromer made of oiled cotton I thought it'd be great for getting caught out in drizzles, I liked the looks overall, and I just naively assumed the flaps would cover my ears, so I ordered one.
Mine is still a good cap, it's just not the really cold weather one I thought I was getting.

I bought one this year for winter camping. I tried it out on Friday while hunting. They are a great hat and they are quite warm. I'm glad that I made the purchase.

I (OP) posted this thread a while back, but have since received my Stormy Kromer and love it. I have worn it all deer season, with sub freezing temps and snow it has been great for walking around. It is not quite warm enough to sit for hours in a windy tree stand, but most winter hats aren't.

It fits great and doesn't blow off ever. The ear flaps are great for windy days, and let the sweat out when you are walking around. This hat is perfect for winter days where you are on the move.
