I've been thinking aobut getting a clutch and/or a suspension. Does anyone have either of these? What can you tell me about the quality of each. I'd especially like to know about the length of the tools on the suspension.

I just got a suspension about a month ago...and I got to say, that thing just sits in my knife drawer. I was NOT impressed with it. The blades are too small to be of any real use, there is too much wobble in the blades and the hinge on the pliers, though spring-loaded, is very chintzy. I'd rather use my broken Leatherman.

Gerber has gone to crap ever since they started making their knives in china. the quality of gerber equals that of taylor cutlery these days . and I am NOT a fan of anything from taylor. I would go with a mid-range Leatherman or SwissTool...you'll get a much better product.

If you want a suspension for cheap, pm me, I have a like-new condition im looking to trade/sell.

The Suspension is a love it or hate it tool. I've seen quite a few people who really like it but most of the opinions I have seen of it are unfavorable. It does have a good selection of tools but it really too large with many blades too short to be a really good multi-tool. Like most of Gerber's Chinese multi-tools the pliers are spring-loaded, an added bonus.

The Clutch is a good, cheaper alternative to the Leatherman Squirt series. But there were some questions about the thin pliers, it is a keychain tool though so YMMV.

Suspension review.

Keep in mind that the problem with Gerber's Chinese multi-tools (Suspension, Tread, Radius, Crux, Method, Resolve) is that they are being sold for almost the exact same price as their American made tools. This creates problems because their American tools are much much better overall than their Chinese tools but they are underrepresented by the price similarities.

I bought a Clutch some months back , the blade is a handy shape and took a nice edge

Overall I guess it's not bad for what it is.

That said though I would not want to rely on it for my sole source of an MT , the pliers are ok for small things like maybe taking a hook out of a fish lip , otherwise I would not depend on them for anything too tough.

It is not nearly as good as Gerber makes it sound on the packaging. :p

For father's day I got a Gerber set which includes the Foreman flashlight, the Clutch minitool and the Resolve multitool. The flashlight is nice and currently my EDC, but that's not your question...

The Clutch:

It is a cute little tool, fit and finish is not bad, all tools snap nicely into place and will do their intended job (which I believe is to serve you in a pinch with simple light jobs), the knife blade was a bit unevenly ground near the tip but easily fixed by a couple of minutes on a hone, the mini screwdriver was kind of roundish on the tip but also fixed easily on the hone, I found the nail file not too comfortable to use and not coarse enough for shaping but workable for finishing or smoothing chips on my nails, the tweezers are small and not very strong but I could easily pull out hairs with them and I guess they should do fine with small splinters (the main pliers should do fine with large splinters), The main jaws feel well made. Not a bad tool to drop in you jeans pocket, I personally don't like much stuff on my keychain but you could put it in one.

The Resolve:

Seems very similar to the Suspension, with the same tools and steel handles, also similar to other Gerber tools including some with aluminum handles. I have mixed feelings about it, it feels large and heavy for what it has yet it seems to work and might be a good choice if you don't want to spend much in a better tool. In general it seems that they could have fitted more and larger tools in those large handles but that would have made the tool more expensive, so maybe it's kind of a compromise, better than a cheap knockoff yet not as expensive a top of the line multitool. One thing that I did not like was that the handles were widely separated even with the jaws fully closed, uncomfortable for my small hands, I removed the four little screws that hold the jaw stopper pieces in place, which caused them to slide out and stop at the raised section near the edge of the handles, now they fit me much better and seem strong enough. If I was to list multitools in order of preference the Resolve would be well below my Leathermans, Victorinox and other Gerbers (I have several of the 600 series) but those are all much more expensive.
