Found a 749 and it's due today, with it's 8" blade (I didn't know you could get them that big) I'm hoping for improved chopping over the smaller models I have.

I have the older carbon version that I bought from Ragnar's a few years ago. It's awfully thin to be much of a chopper in the sense of working like a true axe. If you consider a machete to be a good chopper then you might like it. Think of it like an Old Hickory butcher knife with a better handle.

It's no Busse, but the edge is good like all the Mora knives. Mine didn't come with a sheath so it lives in a kitchen drawer. I might make a sheath some day but I don't really see a need to carry a long, thin knife like this out in the wild.

I chop a lot of thin green branches off hiking trails, I didn't mean a chopper like an axe. Just it should have a bit more momentum than the 4" models I have.

Here's mine in hand. I think it would do what you want with little trouble.

Here's mine with the 4-1/4" Bushcraft model. I haven't used it yet but I'm about to head out for a couple miles before dark.

I think you will find a 10" or 11" blade which is 'relatively' thin and fairly wide will work better for branch/bush clearouts. My 2c*.

Hey jill, why is the belt loop thingy crooked in that pic? It's on a swivel?

Yes, it swivels and you can use it to help access and replace.

This one works a charm for what I want. I just need to snap cut mostly single thorn branches off trails, they grow quickly and I like to be able to keep them trimmed back so they don't stick me passing by. But, you are correct if I was doing a lot of it a machete would be great.

Oh ok, ... -I didn't want to bring the word machete in due to the possibility of "list vertigo", although machetes are part of what I was getting at.

I have this Mora 749. Very long, very sharp very shiny and very thin. I wouldn't do a lot of camping work with this one. Instead a Companion HD maybe. I have it mostly because I am collecting Moraknivs and this one is kinda rare and now hard to find in the U.S. I carry the Mora basic and Companion HD along with many, many folders, so as I said, I found one (finally), for $23 and NOT the usual $99.
