anyone have both a Boar Spear and the new MAA Winged Spear?

I'm trying to talk myself into one to fiddle with thinking that eventually I could use it to finish off snared wild hog from a safe distance....

My concerns are that the old reliable stand by boar spear while effective might be out classed by the new MAA Winged Spear, but with literally 0 reviews that I can find yet on the MAA Winged, I'm not sure its able to get as sharp as the Boar Spear.... I've seen knife cuts made with the Boar spear that rivaled the best knives I've seen reviewed....and the general thoughts are that its able to get that sharp cause its one layer of roll stamped steel so it effectively IS a knife edge while the MAA as near as I can tell is 2 pieces of steel welded together at the edge and then sharpened after the welded edges are cleaned up....if that's the case it'll always have a thicker edge than the boar spear and never be quite the cutter.....

Any experience with either one would be appreciated!

I have an MAA spear, but it is the Lance Point. I prefer the MAA spears because they have fully enclosed sockets, not just rolled sheet metal sockets like the Boar Spear and Assegai spears. Those stamped and rolled spear points should be $29.99 with the handle. That's what they're worth.

I do not know how they make the MAA spears, but they do not appear to have a welded-seam. Instead I think they are hammer forged. However they do it, they look great.

My MAA Lance Point spear is pleasing in every respect. I chose the Lance Point because it does not have broad, sharp edges that could cut my dog inadvertently. I believe it would be better for penetrating armor as well. The disadvantage is it cannot be used for slashing or hewing, but the pole itself still has some effect with those motions. I also like the MAA Classic Leaf Shape Spear, the MAA European Spear, and if I ever need another spear I may get one of those.

Here's a couple videos on winged spears and boar spears:

Part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjqwZrEnJTU
Part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uKp6AHpwgM

After studying and understanding the difference between a winged spear and a boar spear, and why they're different, you will see that:

* Cold Steel's Boar Spear is made like a winged spear. It has a long blade that is proportionally narrow. It has the wings at the base of the socket.
* Cold Steel's MAA Boar Spear is made like a boar spear should be. It has a short, wide blade with the cross piece at the base of the blade.
* Cold Steel's MAA Winged Spear is made improperly. The wings are at the base of the blade with hardly any space between the blade and the wings. Although this is not totally useless, I believe it was done because of how the spear head is formed. The disadvantage is it would be harder to get an opponents' pole-arm to engage in the narrow socket between the rear of the blade and the front of the wing.

Of these three, I would still probably choose the MAA Winged Spear. Although the non-MAA boar spear has some advantages in the shape, the method of stamped and rolled construction is undesirable to me. I just imagine that to properly make a winged spear, it would require a different, more costly construction method to form the wings properly.

Instead of a winged spear, I would probably look more into the Seargant's or Swiss Halberds, the English Bill, or even the Tiger Fork.

My MAA Spear was made in India, and I'm betting it was made by Windlass. Check out their other spears too: http://windlass.com/product/spears-and-polearms/

Your experience thoughts are the same as mine on these spears.
I have several of the Cold Steel spears.
The MAA classic leaf spear, the MAA European Spear, the MAA Wing spear, both Assegai's,long and short, and the Boar spear.

The Assegai and the Boar spear have a better fit and finish.
The classic leaf has a little bend in the head, where the socket connects to the head when looking on the sides/edges. Not much, but a little.
The edges are not as sharp as those of the Assegai and Boar spear.
I have seen some opinions against Assegai and Boar spear not being totally enclosed, the wrap around system.
But I see no disadvantage in this build.
It is also easier to fix the pole into the spearhead, and getting it out also when the part into the head is broken.
Although drilling out a broken off pole in the socket is no problem either..

I found the Wing spear a little heavy, being 1140 gram(2.5lbs)Spearhead on the end of a long stick makes it a bit slower in maneuvers.
Especially compared to the 585 gram/1.2lbs of the Boar spear, and the 447gram/0.98lbs of the Assegai .
Those are much faster to maneuver.

There's a video made by a guy who used the long Assegai on a black bear(not discussing about the ethics of it here, people have lots of opinions about that, you can fill a telephone book with these opinions :- ).
It showed it was very efficient at its task.Very sufficient indeed.
The MAA European spear I like the best of the 3 MAA spears I own.
It has a 761 grams/1.6 lbs head, which is substantially lighter.
It is more elegant, better balance , and deeper penetration given the fact that there are no wings directly behind the spearhead as is the case with the MAA wing spear.

Edit:
Done some stab tests with all the spears mentioned.
The MAA Winged Spear was actually the most effective.
It went through the phone book easily.
The Boar Spear as well, but not as powerful, as the CS Winged spear did.
I thought that the thick ridge in the middle of the spearhead would make penetration less effective.
Given the thicker tip also , because of that.
But no.
Not at all...
It surprised me in a very good way..

For stabbing purposes those MAA spears of Cold Steel are very effective.
