I was lucky enough to pull a deer tag in X7A zone this year in CA. I was hoping to find someone with experience in that zone. It will be the first time hunting there so any info can help. The season is Oct 6- Oct 21.

Thanks.

First of all, congrats on getting drawn. Me and my kids once again did not get drawn for any premium tags or junior hunts, including X7B. :-( I have spent a fair amount of time in the Truckee area and have ridden my dirt bike on the West side of 89 in your zone North of Truckee (i.e. the Eastern part of your zone). There is a lot of forest around there, creeks, streams, and fire roads. I frequently see deer in the Summer. If I had been drawn for this zone, I would focus around the intersection of 89 and Henness Pass Rd and West of that area. There appears to be many streams and rivers and small lakes in that area, as well as logging roads to get you out to the back country. The terrain is not as severe as it is around Donner Pass, more rolling hills and forest, less granite. From the zone map, that section of the zone looks mostly national forest. I know on the East side of 89 (X7B) there is a lot of private land and park land around the reservoirs. You picked what looks like a good zone. Believe it or not, that area is pretty remote and I don't think the deer see many people. If you want to stay closer to Truckee, you can take any of the logging roads coming off of Alder Creek Rd. near 89 and can ride for miles without seeing anyone. It looks like the northern part of the zone is off limits, and I would assume that the West side of the zone is steep, rocky, granite. I would try to scout it in the Summer. I would use archery or rifle in the areas I've been to, since the forest and terrain would support both. If you plan on jeeping/ATV in the back country, I'd bring a GPS. It's easy to get lost. Keep us posted on how it goes and any scouting reports. Good luck. Also, I forgot to add there use to be a small OHV park in that area a few miles north of truckee off 89, but I think they closed it. Another landmark to make note of.
