Times like this I wish I still lived in Houston with Texas knife supply. Does anyone know of a place that sells knife steel bar stock (stainless steel specifically) in the DFW area where I can buy directly? Tired of paying shipping charges that double the price of my steel right off the bat.

Did a quick Google search and for "knife steels Dallas" and four came up. One or two highly rated. Not vendors here, so no names. Search and you shall find!

Remember that all steel suppliers are as close as your mailbox. Many of us use Chuck at USA Knifemakers or Aldo at New Jersey Steel Baron.
O1 and W2 can be found at Fastenal stores, which are pretty much everywhere.

Besides keeping our suppliers in business, there is a good reason to buy knife steel from a knife supplier. All steel of the same name type isn't the same. There can be differences in the alloying that are good for industry, but not what we want as knifemakers. The knife suppliers carry the alloying we want.

I buy from @Alpha Knife Supply . They ship priority and charge cost + $1.

You can get a lot of stainless bars up to 12" in one of those packages and shipping is like $8

I'll also recommend Chuck at AKS. Shipping charges to you are what he pays, and his steel prices are typically beyond reasonable (Not that NJSB isn't, but his shipping is a bit high if you're just buying one piece).

The thing is, you MIGHT find somewhere close that offers steel, but their price will probably be the same minus shipping as AKS is with shipping. In fact, it may even be more.

Buy in larger Volume, Aldo is in NJ, I’m across the country in Santa Monica Ca, I buy a Sheet or three every Time .. just bought two of Nitro-V last month. The Steel doesn’t eat or take up much room!:D

I order from Amteksteel.com for my O1 and they are so much cheaper than anywhere else I can find. Material has been top notch. One barstock was lost in a package and another bent (but still usable) and they resent another full order at no cost. (damaged by usps of course). They also have A-2, D-2 and premar 440C and a few others..

Another vote for SB Specialty. They're reasonably priced and good folks to deal with. Texas Farrier Supply in Kennedale is also starting to carry a decent assortment of knifemaking supplies. As has been said, you can order anywhere if you buy enough to make shipping proportionally smaller.

One last suggestion! Mark your steels with a Sharpie of that color code or write , for instance, 440C every 10” inches because as the years roll by you will not remember which is CPM-35 or Nitro-V or 0-1 or 5100 Blah Blah...????????? Ask me how I know this???:D..A spark test doesn’t always tell you enough for a proper HT:p

Texas Farrier Supply is in Kennedale and has a growing selection of steels and materials. They're open for a blacksmithing event today. I went by to get a few belts. Might be worth a call to see if they have stainless and how late they'll be there.
