I need some information from someone on the ground down in that area if anyone in here can do that. I put it in here because the information I need about moving and stuff is more likely to be found from people in this forum and not others. I need some info about shooting on your own property and stuff down there and more...

I have family in that area...My father spent alot of time in Wise/Pound Va. growing up. It's takes me about an hour to get to Wise from my house now. As far as the laws..Va. is very strict on alot of things, I'll ask my Father about your questions & get back to you. e personally I don't like Va. :thumbdn:

i was going to say that you can probably find the county code on the county website...

...however their website has two links to the code, neither of which works.

I lived down there for about a year between 86 and 87, IIRC. You could hunt with a crossbow without a handicap permit in Kentucky but not Virginia but you couldn't use slingshots to hunt small game in Kentucky. That's more stuff I have to look into.

I'm not enthralled about it but, hey, I'd be more free than if I stay here.

Thanks everyone!

A lot of people in here might disagree, but I'm not a yahoot, as my Dad used to call them. We generally refer to "yahoots" as "dicks" nowadays. I'm not looking to move to the "country" and start bitching about stuff to make it more "city." I can't stand people like that. Those types of people totally changed states like Colorado and have tried their best to infect/infest Montana, etc.

I'm also not really looking to move to the country to start acting like a total tool about the increased degree of freedom I might have, disturbing my neighbors and being a tool in different ways. I'd like to be able to shoot if I buy a couple/few acres but I'm not looking for the "right" to shoot all the time no matter what, etc., etc., etc..One of the first things I would like to do is get a dozer in there and push me a up a nice berm for a backstop, maybe move some boulders around and stuff and have a nice area in the "backyard" for lookin' at. A rock garden maybe. "He's a strange feller, nice'enuff, keeps to hisself and'll help ya out iffin you break down...boys a bit strange and likes lookin' at big rocks in his backyard though." :D

I'm just trying to maximize my liberty, within reason...

And that's what it's really all about, isn't it? Just about the money. I'm about priced out of a hunting license here and I don't think I am in the market for a 40.00+ fresh water fishing license here.

I don't know where you live now Don, but VA is a "shall issue" state regarding CCC permits. Take a 1 day class, range qualify (some of the instructors don't even require that), pay for your prints and background checks then pay the county for your permit. We're not that far southwest, as we have some land near Max Meadows. It borders the JNF, and we've never had any issues hunting/shooting on our property. VA doesn't require a hunting permit if you're on your own land.

If you're in the county and not in a subdivision, you'll have most all of the freedoms it sounds like you want.

Yeah, I know about the Shall Issue Law. Here in Maryland, we keep pointing the politicians and Maryland State Troopers towards Virginia and asking them, "where is the bloodbath you predict?" And they just roll their eyes at you. What they don't want to admit is the fact that they are simply bullies with power. When confronted with the truth and they still lie...we trust these people to pull us over in the middle of the night? I mean, they are not all like that but I think around here it is a myth that the "street cop" is "pro-gun." Anyway, enough of that! Thanks for the info! Even if I land across the border in Kentucky, they are Shall Issue as well.

There is reciprocity between Kentucky and Virginia, yeah?

No. No they ain't.

We dun like you fellers from Vir-ginnie. So jus' you stay on your side o' the state line and we'uns'll stay on ern.

:D

You'll like Wise County, Don. It's a real nice place. It gets a little rough in the Winter (my little sister lives near Richlands and they got hammered with this last snowstorm. Their power was out for almost a week).

Anyhow...just stay out of the subdivisions and city limits and you'll be able to do pretty much what you want on your property.

Some advice though:

Pound Mountain is a pure bitch in wintertime if snow/ice hits (like it usually does). Get a 4 x 4 and some chains. Of course, you'll only use Pound Mountain if you come into Kentucky for some reason-- you'll know it's Kentucky, because you'll hear a fell voice screaming ",GEEEEET OOOOOOOUUUUUUUT!!!".

j/k

What about us Vir-ginnieans that own land in Kin-tuckey?

Chains and a 4X4? A track loader works better! :D

I'm familiar with The Pound and Pound Mountain. Wise County, I just lived down there, though. I was wondering about renting/ownership issues.

I get free passage into Kantuckee. My mother is from Fleming-Neon right over Pound Mountain in Letcher County. :)
