Apologies for the non-knife question, but I figured if anyone knows it'd be you guys...plus, I'd rather support someone from the forums. Looking for anyone making good wood walking canes (with handles, not walking sticks). Thank you and regards,

It depends on the type of cane you are looking for. Just as with knives, the answer is going to be dependent on the end use. Different sources for different styles/types. I have 4 different canes to choose from (along with both 48" and 60" walking sticks - eliminated already by you.:() Which one I use depends on where I'm going or what I'm doing that day.

An old fashioned, 1-1/8" to 1-1/2", crook-handled livestock cane for general support use? Or a dressier cane for going out on the town, say on the order of 1" or less?

Plain, stained, painted, lacquered/varnished or color-laminated shaft?

Plain handle? Metal handle - brass, copper, stainless? Burnished, polished, powder-coated? Animal figured handle? Hickory, oak, ash, birch, dogwood, etc? Straight shaft, carved shaft or twisted?

The options are all over the map.

There is a really cool shop in London, England (on Oxford St.), James Smith & Sons that sells canes (nice blackthorns, too), walking sticks, umbrellas and a whole lot of other neat stuff. Give them a look. Wish I'd picked up a blackthorn cudgel when we were there a few years back.

Re: use, my dad's getting old and needs a cane to assist with walking. He's about 5'9". He doesn't need a walking stick, but rather a cane with a handle, preferably 90 degrees vs the curved 'crook' handle. He presents a little bit of a contrast in that he's a simple, good ol' boy who likes simple things, but he's also expressed an interest in carving on the cane. I was hoping to find something that will last and is sturdy/strong enough to take some weight (he's not a light guy and will use it to take weight, not use it just to look cool), but he definitely wants something made of wood. My thought was to look for a nice root cane, one where the handle is part of cane itself vice attached (simply because I think it will be stronger). Many things will meet the need...however, I was hoping to find a small town kinda' craftsman, someone for whom quality and construction are of primary importance vice producing in quantity. I'm certain the right mass production company will put out a good quality, long lasting product, but I tend to prefer the independent guy. I appreciate all your input so far and I did check out Canemasters, Smith & Sons and Brazos. If I can't find ad small town craftsman to patronize, I'm certain I can get what I need from one of these companies. Thanks to all and regards,

Regards,

lots of derby cane makers on both side of the atlantic. while still relatively young, i find myself hobbling at times due to sprains and over-extensions and i like borrowing my mother-in-law's orthopaedic cane:

Fashionable Canes has a wide selection. Before my hip replacement, I spent a lot of time browsing there although I never bought one from there. They have all different kinds of materials and handles.

The old fashioned livestock canes are cool looking and can be cut to any length but they are really heavy for a walking cane. I've heard good things about Cane Masters.

Take a look at the Whistle Creek American Craftsman Series walking canes.
They have Fritz handles which are attached through a mortise and tenon joint to the shaft.
This is a much stronger handle attachment than the industry standard.
They come in 3 combinations of wood.
