Hi I am about to get on a plane to the UK for a three week holiday and wondered if there are any manufacturers of traditional English pocket knives operating, like a UK version of Great Eastern Cutlery? I am sure there are heaps of custom manufacturers but I'm after quality mass market like GEC and other American manufacturers. I am hoping to pick something up as a keepsake for the trip.

Still plenty of knives getting made here, whereabouts specifically are you headed?

Short anser is no,I sold on my Sheffield made knives.Stick with GEC much better bet imho.

I am in London for a few days then driving to Glasgow for a couple of weeks. Any tips appreciated.

I'd recommend calling in Sheffield on the way, plenty to see there for cutlery enthusiasts, but if you only have a couple of hours, drive straight to 'The Famous Sheffield Shop' on the A625 (signposted from the M1 motorway) or Ecclesall Road as it's called. Paul there will sort you out. He has a fantastic range of Sheffield knives at all prices :thumbup:

Three recently made Sheffield Lambsfoot knives.

Taylor's Eye Witness still make a superb product. Better to check in person though because they sometimes send out a lemon. Here's an online review you might enjoy;

I have my fathers which he carried for about 50 years.

There is also the one and only Mr Stan Shaw who is still alive and producing knives - you wont get much more Sheffield than that living Legend, but follow Jacks advice - he will know - Jack nice knives matey !!

3 lovely Lambsfeet, Jack!! :thumbup::thumbup: As usual, it's taken me over 48 hours after catching a glimpse of that luminescent oxhorn to actually recover sufficient cognitive function to respond! :eek::D:D

Thanks for showing that one again, Paul! Each time I see that green beauty is kind of a heart-warming experience! :):thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks for the replies everyone, I will be stopping at Sheffield!

Good stuff. If you have a day there, in addition to your knife-buying trip, I'd reccomend visiting the Millenium Galleries in the city centre, Kelham Island Industrial Museum, and Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet (you'll find threads about all of them here) :thumbup:

Thanks Duncan :) Stan works most Mondays and Thursdays at Kelham Island, but he has rather a long waiting-list for his knives :thumbup:

Thanks pal :D :thumbup:

Let's not forget Trevor Ablett. Although not on a GEC footing in output,patterns or finish his knives are obtainable. I've been pleased with this 3.5" /9cm Stag Barlow even if I'm not very keen on brasswork on knives. Good snap, blade eventually got sharp...no gaps and feels good in the hand. I'd like to try one of his Etrick knives in Stag too. Certainly this knife is vastly superior to any of the Wright knives I've had, nor did it cost more.
