I don't know if this is in the right section but i was wondering if anyone had one and if they did what their response was

I have both the old and new versions by Cold Steel. My sjambok of the older variety is heavily modified, and I've had to use it before.

I have the older version and the new one as well. I think it will work well for its intended purpose and is actually a Cold Steel product worth having.

I know one person does.

The Sjambok is fun as Hell to mess around with, will duplicate everything it's shown doing on the CS DVD, and if you find the right girl to date, she'll like it too };-> ! I have the 42" version and it really is fun to mess with. I plan on getting the 54" version, because that seems like it would actually get a better 'whipping' motion. Pizza boxes and wiffle-balls beware!

I have both an early CS version and a real African one made from hippo hide. The hippo hide is denser and stiffer so you can actually make eye thrusts with it, but beyond that, the CS can hold it's own.

Sjamboks were traditionally used for weapons bu shepherds in Africa and they were also used by Apartheid-era police for riot control, torture and to beat people to death. It is a nasty device.

I have both Cold Steel models. When showing my brother my new toys he playfully hit me across the back of my leg. Lol, I tried to high step out of the way but still ended up with a nice welt :) I have no doubt you could inflict serious if not fatal damage with one of those things. I bought another small one for a friend. She takes her dogs for walks in snake/racoon country.

I have the older CS 42" model. I was impressed at first but in reality I would hesitate to use it on man or beast without a very good reason. It is a serious weapon.

I have the 42 inch newer version. I hit my heavy bag with it. For 10 bucks you can't go wrong.

I have two made in South Africa one is 36" the other 48", you can leave a 1/4" deep welt in pine wood with the 48" one.

I've had one for a few years now(about 12, I think). Its one of the CS 42s, I didn't like the handle so I used para cord to re wrap it so i could hold onto it better. It will take apart a 4 inch sumac pretty easy.
now with that said, in my opinion, yes it is a serious weapon, BUT,
unless you strike someone in the face or neck, HARD, all its gonna do is make someone really pissed off. My point is, it will definitely cause some pain,(a lot of it) but not everybody is going to stop their attack just because of pain. you might just turn someone who wasn't very serious about the attack into a very serious attacker.
example,
1. your average person who has never been hit in the face, gets punched square in the nose, blood starts flowing, tears come to the eyes. fights over.
2. Mike Tyson, takes a punch square in the nose and suddenly he thinks its foreplay, and you are his new room mate.
I could be wrong, but, I wouldn't want to count on it unless its all i had.
they are fun to play with tho.
just my opinion, YMMV.

I owned all sizes of the old CS plastic jobs. I used to carry one while walking my dog, to scare off aggressive strays by brandishing or whacking the pavement. Very effective. Now I have a 75 pound dog and I don't need a sjambok.

I thought 54" was slow and unwieldy, YMMV. I've seen films of South African police using them to beat hell out of demonstrators: they used very large sjamboks, but the people they were beating were trying to run away and not fighting back.

Sjamboks have been used in Africa from time immemorial to kill poisonous snakes.

Partially true as it depends on what kind of BG you are facing. If you are facing BGs that are basically cowards but want to steal your money or beat you down because you look like an easy mark, then a sjambok will help to dissuade them.

If you are facing some nutjob who is so whacked on drugs that they don't feel pain, then you may indeed be SOL... but bullets don't dissuade this latter type either.

When learning to use a sjambok, you need to think speed and multiple hits. Don't think of it as a baton or baseball bat where you take a swing and look for results. Think of whipping it in a big circular motion over your head as fast as you can while still in control, now hit the BG preferably in face, throat or fingers every time that sjambok circles around towards the BG. If done right, you should be making 3-6 contacts before the BG even registers the first hit. Don't stop, keep repeating as necessary.

Sjambok= pain compliance weapon
Bullets(if used correctly)=DRT. they don't depend on pain compliance to work.
as far as drugs go, they do hinder pain compliance, BUT a solid hit to the brain, brain stem, or upper spine doesn't require pain compliance to be effective.

Just a though but since propelyne is so flexible, wouldn't it be goo for making a bow if it was thick enough
