I was considering getting the new Dexter Russell 3 way sharpener.
I see in the pics the guy is sharpening a kitchen knife, but would it work for pocket knives, hunting knives, etc?
It's nice cus it has 3 grit stones on it and you can sharpen vertically or horizontally.

Any plus or minus's to this system would be great to hear about.
Thanks in advance

Good for soft steel kitchen knives that you don't care if your tips are rounded or not but its not something I would use on a good knife.

I'm thinking that rounding tips over is an operator issue.

Have you actually tried it knifenut?

Dave, good to see you here! You might remember me, you got me the first bottle of HA 1 micron compound.

No personal use of that product but from experience with round sharpening tools tips and choils or the area near the handle of the blade always seem to be a problem with that type of tool. Being round also makes for a very small point of contact which with high hardness blades can lead to microchipping and more importantly inconsistent angle because of that small point of contact.

Rounding tips is a user issue, and can happen the same way with traditional stones. The small point of contact would make me worry more about excessive burring than chipping. Either of which are, again, pretty much user issues. The key here is less the medium rather than technique. Any medium, rods, stones, freehand, jigs, will produce excellent results if the use knows not only how to use the tools, but why they are used in such a manner. Following instructions helps, but may not get you out of a jam if you're experiencing recurring problems such as excessive burring, chipping, wire edges, etc. This is where knowing the whys of knife sharpening really helps, and begins to make the sharpening medium less relevant.
