I am looking at getting one of the S.A.S.S. Smocks in olive green. The cotton fabric they are made from is very similar to Ventile, so AIUI it is breathable, windproof, but quite water repellent.

Has anyone here used one, and if so, how do you like it? Any dislikes?

Thanks.

I have Canadian Forces version, with the angled mag pockets on the chest. Same material, tough as nails, waterproof.

no way would i pay what some of these places are asking for the SAS smock

So I wonder what then would be a cheaper as good version available here in the states?

The S.A.S.S. smocks are hand made to order so that explains some of the expense. The price isn't out of line when compared with other top shelf gear from companies like Mountain Hardware or Arc'Teryx.

man....Ive always wanted one of those. Right on on the price though. Compared to TAD gears ranger hoodies, and other high end soft shells, they arent too bad.

I don't really think you can get an equivalent material product any cheaper, Ventile has always been expensive !:(

I've been eyeing them for a while, but really can't justify the expense. A few people over on BushcraftUK and possibly BritishBlades have done reviews of them.

Probably more expensive, but on this side of the pond, it's hard to beat the Canadian Dropzone Tactical Smock. Mine is in Multicam and it's first rate.

I know people who used aussie made versions for cadets, absolutely loved them, said the were great.

In fact, I might have to get one myself :D

hard to beat ANYTHING from the Crew at DropZone! their stuff is world renowned for being brutally tough

Yeah, I was looking at the Dropzone Recce Smock as well. The S.A.S.S. smock looked like a less expensive alternative.

The Dropzone smock (at least my Recce version), is probably a bit over the top on features compared to the SASS standard version you linked to...I actually like that one as well.

For a cotton smock that's water resistant I quite like this one: The Camp Anorak 3/4 the way down the page !
I think PayetteRucker mentioned that one in another thread, too. Looks good, but they sure are proud of it!
Have to watch the clearance pages later on. I got some of their $80 PowerStretch 1/4 zips for $22.99. Have to wonder how well those(or any clothing item) will sell at $250:confused:

this is the older CDN Forces ventile jacket, modeled by my GF (face hidden for privacy reasons due to her work in a sensitive political environment)

FONLY will recognize this jacket:

I've tried SASS's SAS smock on (a friend's) and loved it - I've wanted one for ages. Every so often a good used one comes up on the British knife and bushcraft forums. Nearly had to buy one just a couple of weeks ago in fact.

SASS can add optional extras as well - I recommend the hood retainer tab and internal map pocket. Their jacket might seem expensive but the quality and bomb-proof construction is well worth it.

My wife said it looked too military though; she made me buy this one instead. It looks more 'country gent' apparently...

It's wonderfully comfortable, well made and certainly withstands the worst rain England can through at me. We got matching ones... awww! I still lust after the SAS smock though for my 'night ops' on the hills around here.
