Can you legally carry a butterfly knive in Texas? If so, what are the restrictions if any?

Please email me with an answer.

It might be better to discuss your issue openly on these pages. You get to benefit from the debate and collect information to make an informed judgement.

By "legal in Texas" do you mean legal to carry, for sale, or for possession?

Texas Penal Code Sec. 46.01
(11) "Switchblade knife" means any knife that has a blade that folds, closes, or retracts into the handle or sheath, and that:
...
(B) opens or releases a blade from the handle or sheath by the force of gravity or by the application of centrifugal force.

Texas Penal Code Sec. 46.05
(a) A person commits an offense if he intentionally or knowingly possesses, manufactures, transports, repairs, or sells:
...
(5) a switchblade knife;
...
(e) An offense ... committed under Subsection (a)(5) ... is a Class A misdemeanor [punishable by a fine not to exceed $4000 and/or confinement in jail for a term not to exceed one year].

Does Texas issue qualified citizens Concealed Weapons Licenses?

This is not to be confused with the Concealed Handgun or Concealed Firearm Licenses that the majority of states issue. A few states (Az and Fl, I know) issue a broader Concealed Weapons License that covers knives, even automatic and balisong knives.

Funny you should ask this question.
When I was stationed in San Antonio I used to go to a Gun/knife store called Nagel's.
Awesome display of all you could want or need.
For the longest time they carried the Benchmade Bali-songs and to my knowledge never had any problems with the law as far as selling them.
Of course the last time I was in there was in '97 so I don't know if that has changed recently.

Butterfly knives are commonly sold in many Texas communities at gun shows, pawn shops, flea markets and probably elsewhere. LEOs generally have more to do than hassle merchants over items that constitute only a small percentage of their inventory. The original poster asked about carry, and the Penal Code sections cited have been in effect since at least 1973. They _are_ enforced if an officer becomes aware that a person is carrying a prohibited weapon.
