Are Kettlebells better than dumbbells for home work out?
I am about to get some stuff to work out at home. I am not going to get a home gym or many stuff. Just a few weights to do after i come home from my walking setion. I will start with one dumbbells or Kettlebells.

Whitch one to tone up and loose some fat?

Thanks

i have not used them much nor am i an expert but i see them being easier to grip securely two handed for twisting type movements. they feel much more ergonomic to use then the traditional hexagonal dumbbells. i also like medicine balls for the same reason. in some instances i prefer to grab a larger object and work different forearm muscles instead of just holding and gripping the 1" tube grip if that makes sense.

Kettlebell is a great workout 30 minutes three days a week. Get a copy of Enter the Kettlebell by Pavel.

They both have their uses. Dumbbells recruit more of the forearm flexors because you have to stabilize the dumbbell; it has a weight on both ends versus the kettlebell that has the weight always on the bottom. As far as ergonomics, in some lifts yes (for kettlebells). In some, no.

For example, bench press using either 2 kettlebells or two dumbells. With the kettlebell, the weight is gonna rest on either side of the elbow. With a dumbbell, that's not the case because the weight is on the ends.

Personally, I'd only use kettlebells to supplement barbells and dumbbells.

EDIT: Then again, my dumbbells are custom made for me to have 15 inch of sleeving for plates.
I've considered making my own kettlebell where I can add plates. I never got around to it, but I just may after all this talk about kettlebells.

I have been working with kb's for the past few years and they have many benefits for functional strength and overall health.

You will definitely need to get some books or dvds to learn how to use them. There are a ton of different exercises to do with them but you need to learn first.

Have fun

I would use dumbells for a home gym.Especially if it's small. You can change the weight with dumbells.Unless you are buying solid dumbells? But go to the store and try them. I never really liked Kettlebells except with my ab workouts. They have alot of them at my gym.

I forgot to mention that heavy kettlebells are more awkward to use than heavy dumbbells, at least for me (only talking about the traditional, solid, non-adjustable kettlebells).

I wonder how huge the ball would be for a 90 - 100 pound kettlebell.

I use both, I find that kb's work the synergist muscles in a group with doing less exercises, where as I find it easier to target muscles with the movements of DB's. I perfer kb's for legs abs and lower back

really depends on what you are looking for, total fitness/functional strenght or body building. for weight loss I would go with kb's for toning up I would go with dumbells

I use both as well, I like to use kettle bells for core strength exercises and use bar/dumbells for more
regular lifts. Body weight exercises are also a great addition to go along with a kettle bell session. :)

if i could only have 1 it would be dumbells, as long as ya have a decent range of weight to work with.

If you're spending the money on one or the other, get dumbbells. For the amount of money you'd spend on 1 or 2 KB's, the amount of weight you could buy for adjustable dumbbells would be far more worthwhile. I made my DB handles out of 7/8" pipe, hose clamps, tennis grip tape, and some DB clamps. Not sure what the final cost was, but for 4 handles, it was less than what it'd cost to buy store-bought ones, and I can load them to a maxof 120lbs, I believe the pipe is 18" long. Eventually I'll buy some 24" pipe to load up heavier for farmers walks and such.

I'd like to get a KB or two, but I simply can't justify the price right now, considering the amount of 1" plates I could buy for the same amount.
