Are neck knives any good?

Hello everyone, I want you guys' opinion on if neck knives are good for EDC. I am currently carrying a Delica 4 ffg and I love it but I am an avid bushcrafter and I would like a little more capability out of my EDC. I was thinking about trying a neck knife, but before I do, I want to see what you guys have to say.

Thanks a lot guys!

It just depends on you, I love neck knives, but hate wearing them around my neck. There's pros and cons but it'll depend on how you feel and what knives you choose. But even if you decide you don't like it around your neck, you can wear it on your belt or in pocket

Honestly I've never understood the so-called neck knives. depending on the situations, I always prefer a good folder (which closed is smaller than a neck knife) or a good fixed blade larger than the folder.

Neck knives simply represent another way to carry a knife. Is carrying a knife around your neck practical? There are certainly pros and cons of carrying a knife this way. I don't like carrying anything around my neck but I do like smaller fixed blades to carry instead of a folder sometimes.

neck knife is a loose definition, it can encompass some tiny practical designs, through heavy clunky large blades swinging on your neck weighing you down.

I find that carrying a neck knife on your hip like in an owb or iwb sheath, you barely feel it at all. The Becker BK14 is one example, to large to me to carry on my neck but it's at home on my belt no problem.

I searched long & hard to find the perfect neck knife for me. It is very light, and it goes in a kydex sheath. My perfect neck knife is a Begg Tree Frog. This is what works for ME, this may not work for you. I went through a lot of neck knives, before I found the perfect one for me.

I don't care for fixed blades that small. I find the handles lacking in most cases, and I don't find the additional capability of a fixed blade that size to be worth the inconvenience trade-off vs a folder. Personally, if I wanted to EDC a fixed blade, I would be inclined to look at something slightly larger, with a full handle and belt carry it.

I love my neck knife:

But one of the reasons I like it is because of its versatility. I carry it three different ways, scout style, traditional style, and around the neck. I notice I like carrying around the neck most when the the weather is cooler. I don't like the knife swinging and dangling around the neck. But if I wear the neck style, it becomes completely unnoticeable, and most comfortable when I wear a t-shirt under the knife and a light shirt over the knife. Of the three styles I wear it scout style most. However, I have noticed that each style has its more applicable situation. That's the great thing about "neck" knives, greater versatility.

I can appreciate the need for a neck knife. I also believe that a MercHarness is a great alternative to carrying one up and off the belt line.

Mine is a Spyderco Bill Moran, it's great!

I carry neckers every day. Once you get used to it, you'll forget it's there and it also becomes a one hand use knife. I use my neckers for cutting more every day than any other blade I have on me at the time.

2 words of CAUTION. If you're going to carry one under your shirt, make sure that the sheath you are using is ultra secure. During activity, you don't want that knife coming out and cutting and stabbing things inside your shirt. By the time you realize it's fallen out of the sheath, it's too late.

Secondly, don't use paracord unless it's in the outdoors or you plan to clean it a lot or change it a lot. While it's cheap, durable, and works well for neckers, it can also be used to strangle you in the wrong situation. I realize that would be rare, but it has happened in real life. I use a stainless ball chain on all of my EDC's except my fishing pliers and my little ESEE Candiru I use at deer camp.

Since I like knives, I tried wearing a neck knife which is essentially just a small fixed blade and often the type of fixed blade people will use for an edc. I didn't like a knife dangling around my neck. I went to either back pocket, belt carry, or slipping it inside my day pack on short hikes. I most prefer horizontal belt carry (scout carry) and with that in mind to this point the knife I am most satisfied with in the "neck knife" category is the Dozier Personal. Wanting to get a Blackjack neck knife; probably will when the time is right. As you can see, I am always looking for other options and like the concept of carrying a small fixed blade on a regular basis.

Are they any good? Of course. The only limitations are the size of the blade.

I like neck carry but I tend to dislike neck knives..... to solve my problem I use a loop of 550 para cord to make my own " necklace " and carry a mid sized folder on it by clipping the pocket clip to the cord....

Its very quick on and off, and I don't have to worry about it falling out of my pocket....and with a knife designed for deep pocket carry there is zero chance of the knife coming off the neck lanyard prematurely.

I carry a small Emerson neck knife when I run. I look at it like survival kits, you layer them from small to large but it is not always practical to carry the large/vehicle sized kit. Like most defensive /offensive weapons the best one is the one you have with you when the time comes.

I regularly EDC a small fixed blade. Many of these could be considered neck knives. I prefer belt IWB or pocket carry rather than neck carry. The only neck knife I do neck carry is the Spyderco ARK as it is completely unobtrusive.

Be careful about using 550 cord though. Without a knot that slips apart you have a very convenient way to strangle yourself or someone else to strangle you.

I did when it was uber-cool to imitate popular YouTube and Television Expert Ninja Stars of Bushcraft.
Dont remember when or why it all changed. Neckknives are for clueless rubes & total chumps.
What was I thinking ??

Um what?

This exactly. The ARK is one of the few truly unobtrusive and comfortable neck knives.

The market is flooded with bulky, chunky, heavy and cheapo neck knives that are a hassle to wear.

The ARK, and the Minimalists by CRKT are the only ones I find really do their job.

You won't notice them there, carry all day long without worrying about retention or sheath problems. And when you need them, quick and easy access.

Really convenient if you don't want to draw attention, and easy to maintain and clean.

I found these neck knives to be perfect for improvised food prep or discrete package opening.

The steel is really easy to sharpen up virtually anywhere. On the coffee mug, the car's window...that's really convenient if you move a lot or travel frequently.

And they tend to be quite rustproof, or totally rustproof if we're talking ARK from Spyderco. Important if you sweat a lot.

I carry neck knives daily, and find them really useful. YMMV, of course.

I tried a few neck knives back when they were becoming popular...Emerson LaGriffe, CRKT Bear Claw, and one by Cold Steel (forgot the name of it). Maybe others. I don't even like necklaces around my neck, so of course, neck knives were not a good match for me. Not to mention, I didn't like the feeling of something hanging down inside my clothes. It felt weird and awkward, always having to adjust the position of where/how it was hanging. That's not to say there aren't any good such knives, just that I don't like wearing them around my neck. I suppose I could carry one, sheath and all, down in my pocket as a fixed blade pocket knife, but IMO that's more hassle than simply carrying a good folder.

If I wanted to carry a fixed blade, I would find a 4" or larger one to carry on my belt.

I'm not a huge fan.

Neck knives are small fixed blade knives. I can get a pocket knife with a larger blade, that weighs the same and has a smaller footprint. No contest which I prefer.

As for neck carry it isn't very appealing to me.
