Are neck knives safe?

the izula is a well made knife, i have no qualms of it coming out of its sheath. and if i fell i dont think it would impale me. i say get it. :D

A sheath with very good retention is important for a neck knife. If the knife hangs handle down, care must be taken that the knife isn't pulled from the sheath when the wearer leans into something, like over a counter, over the side of a pickup, or something else that might come to the level of the knife.

I've had a couple of neck knives fall out of their sheaths, inside my shirt.

I don't like the idea of neck knives, as I don't want to reach under my shirt to grab my knife, and typically cannot wear it on the outside of my shirt... it just so happens that the izula will easily fit in your front or back pocket and disappear... so that is how I carry mine.

i carry my izula IWB in a custom sheath...its perfect for me, i dont really care for the idea of it around my neck...thats just me though...

The sheath is important, you definitely want retention, should be no trouble on that score with the Izula, which people generally rave about.

Another safety issue is the lanyard used to hang it. Some believe using something really strong like paracord is inadvisable as if you are active (i.e. picture an LEO jumping over a fence) it might get caught and hang you. Most come with bead chain which will suffice to hold but break rather than pose a choking hazard, though no doubt there are lots of cords and lanyards that can do the trick.

Neck knives are very dangerous. Do not buy them, you will be endangered.

:D

Seriously:

As was mentioned before, make sure the sheath has good retention. Wearing on does take some getting used to. I have a dogfish I carry IWB due to the accelerated rusting that occurred when I had it on the chain.

Also, ease of carry may depend on body size.

I wear a neck knife everyday and have never felt there was anything unsafe about it. I use ball chain so no worries about choking. My one-handed method of re-sheathing the knife is to get the tip started then point the knife directly at my right pectoral and jam it in. Never a problem.

You can fall on it without the risk of impalement as long as it in it's sheath :D.

Seriously though, I particularly can't see huge benefits of carrying a knife around your neck instead of on your belt, pocket or pouch. Even so, I don't think it's dangerous, as long as the sheath is good. From what I read the Izula is pretty good in that department.

It's on my list (well, the spot on the list is still being disputed with the Becker Necker ), but whichever I get, I don't think I'll use it around my neck.

It is a very handy method of carrying a small fixed blade, if fast access isn't an issue. I wear one quite often for utility purposes. Mine is a CRKT Falcon, which is a nice little knife. The only concerns I have are 1. The paint on the chain came off and left marks all over my neck (replace chain..) and 2. Unless you hear the blade click into place it isn't held firmly. Not a problem for me, but my father-in-law used it and promptly dropped it on the ground because it wasn't sheathed properly.

I like neck knives as they allow access very rapidly, especially when you are in awkward positions such as sitting in your car. They can be easily drawn and resheathed one-handed.

Neck carry can take a while to get used to and some experimentation as far as chain vs paracord, etc. If you give it a few weeks and find something that works, you may never be without a neck knife again.

I carry my izula iwb, and I've also been carrying it around my neck for the past week, everyday at work, I move around, lift heavy objects, either 50lbs or 110lbs take your pic, and the izula has never come out.....the factory sheath is great!!!!!!!

you should ease that confused space in your wish list by holding out for a beckzula/B-RAT or whatever they end up calling it when it comes out. Blade of a BK11 on an Izula handle -- truly it will be the best of both worlds!

nothing unsafe about them beyond any other fixed blade.

I personally like vertical carrying in leather sheath as opposed to handle down.

Any possibility of it having scales? The Bravo Necker is also in the disoute because of it's scales, though being so much more expensive then the other two is a handicap.

I've got a Newt Livesay Bow Hunting Buddy and a couple Cold Steel Spikes. I wore the Bow Hunting Buddy everyday at work for about five years and then off and on since then. Never any problems and always came in handy when necessary. The spikes were more of a novelty.

It is the perfect place to carry if your duty belt or anything else for that matter impedes your front pockets. You can retrieve it with either hand if you find your dominant hand pre-occupied. ;)

I suggest that you use chain similar to the kind used for dog tags or something that can break away easily to carry the knife as you would not want to be strangeled by a rope or string.

i have a becker necker which i love... wear it every day, no problems. i just paracord with it but it has a cord lock at the end so it is breakaway on the slim chance i find myself in a situation that it will choke me.

Two things I dislike about them is if it is One a crummy sheath, sucks to have a fine blade tip get bunged up because if fell on the pavement. Two driving as the seat belt always sits over the sheath on me, and I'm worried about what might happen in a collision. A collision is an incredible violent near instant thing. I don't like a metal bade between my heart and the strap that will keep me from going airborne.
