Are Paypal eCheck payments as safe as instant payments?

Here's a little backstory:

Last night I offered a set of headphones on Ebay with a "Buy it now" option. Someone opted for BIN and Ebay told me that my item had sold. The buyer is in Puerto Rico, has been an Ebay member for 2 months and has a single transaction with positive feedback for an item that cost $7.00 (the headphones cost $235). I'm not overly comfortable at this point.

I receive notice of payment this afternoon and it's an eCheck that's going to take a number of days to clear the buyer's bank account.

My big question is if this type of payment is as safe as an instant Paypal payment. Does anyone know?

The whole thing feels a bit scammy but not enough to set off ALL of my dectectors!

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Wait until the payment has cleared before you ship. He should be expecting that. eCheck means his PayPal account is tied to a bank account but has no back up funding source. I sent a few of those when I didn't realize the card I had on file with them had expired. I'd gotten the new card, but hadn't filed the new expiration date with PayPal.

Thank you for the input! I've sent an email to the buyer letting them know that I cannot ship until their eCheck payment clears. I'm just hoping that once it "clears" that means that the money really is there. :)

If I were you, I would send the headphone with tracking and a signature required. If you ship using the USPS Click N Ship it only costs $2.20 and you will have proof that it was delivered.
