Are there any custom makers that specialize in daggers?

When looking at the production daggers available it seems that the stock removal method is just pushing everyone to "cheap out" and offer overly thick blades with no distal taper. To top it off, the blades are relatively narrow as well as thick so you get ridiculously obtuse edges.

Daggers are designed for stabbing, true, but the lack of sharpness on what people are selling for 300-500 bucks I find pathetic and a well-made dagger should be able to cut and not just function as a spike/awl. I think custom is probably the only way to go.

Are there any custom makers that specialize in double edged stuff? I've never owned a dagger as there were legal issues in my state until about 2 years ago. I suspect due to their legal status in many areas that's why there aren't too many around.

My Randall cuts great and could come in near your range through one of the dealers:)

What type of dagger are you looking for?

This is a Ka-bar model called The Kid - 2751 Slim dagger. More of a Gamblers boot knife or a dress style

I find it's harder to find a small dress styled model than military

Blade is only 3.5/16" thick (based on area in front of bolsters) and nicely shaped - 6 3/8", so not a large knife

I redid a bad handle, but didn't sharpen it as blade edge needs a cleaning.

I think that if you can spare the money, it would be very satisfying to help design what you want in a custom.
You can see even in the pics posted in this thread, the wide range of blade profiles.
I'm in the early stages of designing a dagger myself (more of a presentation version than hard use).
I went through Coops sticky thread in this forum and grabbed about 60 images of daggers without favoring anything yet (everything from Warenski, Carter, Fuegen, Hanson, van Barnett, Hogstrom, Bump, Cronk and many more).
Then focusing only on the blade profile I tried to identify profiles I preferred or not for this project and see what it is about them (profile, grind etc).
Working from those elements I have arrived at a profile and grind. Next I will look at guards, handles, pommels, overall flow etc.

Your thread makes me want to plan a more robust user design next...

If it was me I’d do everything possible to save more money and buy a custom from T.K. Steingass. In my opinion his daggers are absolutely stunning, well all his knives are really!!!

Thanks for the kind words - I love designing and crafting a quality dagger. However, they do require a lot of labor to make and that does bring the price up. :(

T.K. Steingass is your man. I'm not sure if you're looking for a folder but if it's a folding dagger you want I'd look at J.W. Smith

Thank you Chris for the mention.

This one I built many years ago.

Wish I could have kept it, but had to keep them darn lights on. lol.
