are winchester knives any good?

Dacus_Nomadic is being kind. I bought a few, years ago, because they were cheap and looked good-mistake! Display/play with, Uh, OK; useful, no way :thumbdn:

Depends, the models you get at Walmart, etc.... I wouldn't trust for heavy work. The U.S. made models that Blue Grass Cutlery has made up under contract by Queen, etc.... are very decent knives, certainly equal or surpassing many traditional knives being made by other US factories.

Not really, man. Did you happen to see the holiday pack at your local wally world or what?

It's not as if the gun makers actually make these knives, right? I just assumed they were farmed out to some Chinese manufacturer in most cases. I guess the HK benchmades are an exception for the most part. Though I did see an HK multitool in a sporting goods store today that was a pretty sketchy looking. It was made in China and was like $150. Yeah right.

I was wanting to know if Winchester knives are any good?

You know, its not a crazy assumption that they (or another gun maker) might put out a good knife. It's just that they don't. Common misconception.

What do you want to do with your knife?
What do you want to spend?
Do you any a fixed blade or folder?

Answer those, and we can get you a good knife.

Not categorically true.... I remember Beretta putting their name on some quality pieces sourced directly from knife makers. Harsey designs made by Fantoni in Italy etc.

I'd probably not buy a Winchester or S&W knife though.

There are some decent made-in-USA knives with gun-makers' names - vintage stockman Remington for example, made by Schrade iirc back before Taylor bought the name for making knives overseas. And as was mentioned, Benchmade makes some of the H&K knives here, Beretta was on some nice Italian knives...

The china-made winchester knives are cheap but look decent and sharpen easily ... the steel quality being so low. Keep a hone handy and you'll be able to get some decent use out of one, or you can mis-treat it like you wouldn't other knives, it being a beater. Otherwise, save your cash and invest in something a little better quality.

Better yet tell us your budget for a Winchester and we will suggest a few better ones.

I have 3 Berettas, The Beretta/Warren Thomas Avenger, the Airlight and the Beretta/Jack Busfield folder.

Now I don't know who makes/made their knives but I'd recommend any of those 3 for their intended purpose, one of which is very purpose specific.

Beretta (the ones from the 80s) is the only one other than old Remingtons I'd buy.

No. They have NO redeeming qualities. I found a Winchester knife a few years ago on the side of the road. Initially I was excited that it was Winchester versus some random $3 gas station special, and I decided to keep the free knife as a throw-away/beater. I tried to sharpen the Winchester knife with my Lansky system and simply couldn't get an edge useable for anything other than butter. It got to the point of using the most aggressive grits to reshape the edge, and still no luck. I didn't have the heart to throw out the knife, so its in a drawer somewhere, but for all intents and purposes its useless.

Winchester knives seriously make Gerber Paraframes and Evos look like Sebenzas and Striders. :thumbdn:
