I mentioned in my Apex thread that I'd post a picture. Just have a minute to take a couple, so here goes...
The Apex with an old knife of my Dad's:
One of all the sharpening stuff I normally use:
Top Left: Spyderco Sharpmaker, Lower Left: All three Edgemaker Pro's, Right: Edge Pro Apex
The Apex rocks for cutting bevels in really dull knives (although my Dad brought up an old 1095 Kabar knockoff that was as dull as a butter knife- that sucker at 1/2 a coarse stone!). It'll get a knife screaming sharp! The Spyderco Edgemaker will put a razor edge on almost anything, too, although if you have to hog a lot of steel out it's slower than the Apex.
Once you have the knife sharp, the Edgemaker Pro sharpeners will do a great job keeping them sharp without removing much metal. You can use the very fine grit yellow Handy Honer as you would a steel. They will sharpen an extremely dull knife pretty quickly too; start with the Blue Bevel Maker, work up thru the two grits on the Red one, finish with the Yellow. It will give you an edge that will shave, but with some blades falls a tad short of the paper-filleting sharpness you'll get with the Spyderco or Edge Pro Apex.
Well, that's all I've got right now. Merry Christmas, all!
