While I was working on a couple of trackers recently I found an absolutely AMAZING FIRE STARTER Never Dull Wadding Polish made by Eagle One. I is a metal polish and cleaner used mainly for cleaning wheels and trim on vehicles and can be found at most of the large retailers in their automotive section and its less than 6 bucks a can(after the tins empty you can use it to make a firekit or charcloth). I was using it to polish Zechs tracker and noticed ot smelled like turpentine so I decided to pull off a bit and try to light it with a firesteel and it worked amazingly. you dont need to fluff it just tear off a piece and and one strike should get it lit.

Thanks Bill

Haa! Used it all the time in the military, but it had never occurred to me that it had a lot in common with a PJCB.
As soon as I saw your thread title I was doing the forehead slap thinking "Of course! Duh!"
Thanks for sharing, that's

Me too! Read the title and thought, "Why didn't I think of that?" Polished lots of brass and aluminum lockers with that stuff.

I've polished many a brass items on CG ships and bases with that stuff. Watch out for fumes, just using it (as advertised) could give you a buzz. Great idea!

How toxic is that stuff? Do you know if it degrades / evaporates over time?

It dries out, that's all I know. You'd have to read the label for toxicity facts. I'm sure it's on an MSDS somewhere..

Thanks, I was wondering if it would be possible to transport without sealing for longer periods of time. I wonder how it would work if dried out or it got wet, if it would still ignite quickly.

I'll look around to see how toxic it is, and post if I find anything, I just thought there might be some info on the can.

Edit: Here it is, doesn't seem too bad, just don't eat it, and probably handle as little as possible:

SECTION 6 - HEALTH HAZARDS

Skin Contact: Low order of toxicity. Skin contact may irritate or cause an existing dermatitis condition

I use it for knife blades. Does a nice job of polishing, never thought of it for tinder. Good idea. I wonder if it would light when wet?
